Please be advised our contractors are installing dams onsite today. The dams are being placed in the canal between Bridge 2, Church Lane Bridge and Bridge 3, Eccles Bridge on the Macclesfield Canal, reducing the affected area of the closure.

Once the dams are in place, we will undertake a Ground Penetrating Radar Survey to ascertain the extent of the issue.

Please note the location and title of this notice has been amended to reflect this new information. Original closure was between the Marple Junction and Bridge 4 on the Macclesfield Canal.

If you are between our closure at Bollington and Bridge 3, your nearest waterpoint is at Bridge 14 and Marple Services can be accessed via the towpath.

An update will be provided Tuesday, 10 March 2020.

Although trapped in a very short section of canal I at least have facilities. I don't envy the towpath moorers and continuous/intermittent cruisers who have to carry their containers of human waste some considerable distance to access Marple Services.

Without being pedantic about their notice, the waterpoint is next to bridge 15, near the trading post and bins. Thankfully I  haven't really used the loo on the boat since last visiting Marple so have capacity left in the portapotti and don't live on my little tupperware. If it does need emptying at least the boat can get up to the closure (can turn 19' virtually anywhere) but bigger boats can't get closer than the proper winding hole. Like you I have a lot of sympathy for those who live aboard but like me are on a towpath mooring without facilities.

Latest is:

Please be advised navigation will remain closed between Bridge 2 and 3 on the Macclesfield Canal whilst we await the results from the Ground Penetrating Radar Survey. Our engineers will then need to review the findings to plan a method of action.

An update will be provided Tuesday, 17 March 2020.

Apparently Marple and Bosley locks are now closed indefinitely as Coombs reservoir feeder has failed leaving no/too little water supply for the Macc/Peak Forest summit... :(

Although CRT are portraying it as "too little water at the start of the season".

That is, to avoid any doubt, a blatant LIE.

At the public meetings held before COVID-19 raised its head, they were VERY VERY clear that the 3 remaining reservoirs were spilling.

https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/refresh/media/thumbnail/41688-april-2020-reservoir-watch.pdf tells us that 74.3% is what 3 full reservoirs looks like. As of mid-April there is 68.7%

Now, given the limited resources for the next 3 years and the potential need to close later in the year if too much water is used now, there is sense in closing the locks completely at a time when there is very little justification for using them, so that there might actually be water if we get any boating done later in the year.

However, they need to be HONEST. The Toddbrook report is critical of their maintenance, and here we see evidence of further failure to maintain. I understand that the feed from Combs has been poor for years, and that they have done nothing about it.

I really do suspect that the end is nigh for CRT

Don't forget the Leeds & Liverpool for the same reason.  You can't make it up the amount of deceit that spouts from CRT.  Canals shut down everywhere due to COVID-19, probably the wettest autumn/winter with widespread flooding.  And  stanking off the flights with ash to prevent leakage [clue there innit?] and even removing parts of locks to prevent vandalism says they are doing it for the long haul.

How much of the network is to become a linear 18" deep ditch surrounded by walkers, joggers, cyclists, all enjoying being better by water?
