my friends eberspacher hot air heater  is producing lots of white smoke when starting up (4-5 mins to do so) after eventually igniting it can run continuously other times it cuts out, does anybody know what could be the problem. thanks

White smoke tend to be unburnt fuel so it is not igniting.

 

How long since a de-coke and service ?

Thank you for your reply, quite a while I should imagine he's only used it this year, after having the boat 3 years, a service is probably the best solution, could you tell me what a de-coke consists of doing and could he do that him self? Again thanks

Check you tube there used to be a bloke on there and it made sense and was a good bit of tuition, unlike the majority of you tube.

It should be possible by a competent person who can follow instructions.

If there is the slightest possibility of 'incompetence' then it is best left to a service engineer.

Could be coolant which has leaked out of the main unit and got trapped between the exhaust and it’s shroud (there is lagging sandwiched between the two, which acts like a wick).  If it is, the smell of burning antifreeze is quite distinct, with a sweetness to it.
