Hi all, back again with another question for you! We have completed the purchase of our narrow boat and it should be moved next week down to near home. So we are looking for insurance quotes. Anyone have suggestions of reputable companies for good quotes.? Thanks.

If you have completed, you need to insure it TODAY.

others are GJW, Collidge, HavenKnoxJohnston...

Agreed, sort it out asap.

We are with GJW. Very good sorting out gettting insurance but as we have never claimed, not a clue how good they are. I suspect given the price of the insurance is so low in comparison to lumpy water boats that they will do everything to avoid paying out. It would be worth asking which companies are good at paying out when you submit a claim.

Welcome to the forum Jason and good luck with your new purchase. You must be very excited!

I use craftinsure.com

Instant cover at the click of a rat...

(Is that actually right?)

Me too. They're well priced and really helpful over the phone too.  Dunno what they're like in the hour of need though, which is the acid test I guess..

GJW have always been good for us, handling change of mooring/address, etc. with ease. They also seem to have a better understanding of specialist craft, a couple of years ago many started to have trouble insuring historic craft but no problem with GJW.

I only need 3rd party and use Basic Boat.   No silly questionnaire and restrictions.  AFAIK it does what it says on the tin.

Me too. Ideal for a fifty year old boat - no request for surveys and a million quid for recovery if it sinks.

Time soon to renew my narrowboat insurance. Last year I switched from Nautical to GJW after many years when they tried to bump up the quote by over 10%.

Sadly GJW have done the same trick and quoted about 13% more than last year (no, I’ve never made a claim). I looked at Basic Boat and was surprised how low their quote is of around £74 for the year. Ok, I appreciate it is just basic but with GJW quoting me around £192 hmmm. Why don’t these companies recognise loyalty? Grr.

Anyway, since this thread is a few months old, any other recommendations?

Edit to say I’m a live aboard CC’er.

I think they're as good as anyone else. I think there was a discussion a few years ago where someone who made a claim had to wait a while but was paid out eventually. Let's face it, none of them really want to pay out. My premiums have reduced over the years as I've never made a claim (touch wood). I'm happy with craftinsure and will carry on using them to insure my boat.

Your premiums have crept up? Mine have slid down. Been with them over 14 years.

Me too - no complaints, although they didn't like the risk of having external skin tank that was added when a new engine was put in a few years ago (by the previous owner).

This bumping up the price massively for exactly the same coverage is common even amongst some one time excellent marine insurers. It's too easy to value new over loyal customers.

FWIW, we're with A-Plan and they haven't tried to gouge us yet - 3rd party and full liveaboard possessions coverage.

Michael Stimpson was a pioneer in developing and writing liveaboard boating insurance, and although semi-retired, he may be open to a query by email if you could track him down.
