Jason Peach
Hi all, back again with another question for you! We have completed the purchase of our narrow boat and it should be moved next week down to near home. So we are looking for insurance quotes. Anyone have suggestions of reputable companies for good quotes.? Thanks.
Momac
Whichever insurer you select .... . Do read the policy wording and understand whether it meets your needs. http://www.yyachtinsurance.com/ https://www.navandgen.zurich.co.uk/en-gb https://www.saga.co.uk/insurance/boat-insurance/boat-plan-boats-over-23ft . Steve42
"it should be moved next week down to near home." If it's being moved by road check that crane/road transport is covered by someone.
matty40s
If you have completed, you need to insure it TODAY. others are GJW, Collidge, HavenKnoxJohnston...

Agreed, sort it out asap. We are with GJW. Very good sorting out gettting insurance but as we have never claimed, not a clue how good they are. I suspect given the price of the insurance is so low in comparison to lumpy water boats that they will do everything to avoid paying out. It would be worth asking which companies are good at paying out when you submit a claim. Welcome to the forum Jason and good luck with your new purchase. You must be very excited! BWM
GJW have always been good for us, handling change of mooring/address, etc. with ease. They also seem to have a better understanding of specialist craft, a couple of years ago many started to have trouble insuring historic craft but no problem with GJW. Murflynn
I only need 3rd party and use Basic Boat. No silly questionnaire and restrictions. AFAIK it does what it says on the tin. https://www.basic-boat.com/

Last year I switched from Nautical to GJW after many years when they tried to bump up the quote by over 10%. Sadly GJW have done the same trick and quoted about 13% more than last year (no, I’ve never made a claim). I looked at Basic Boat and was surprised how low their quote is of around £74 for the year. Ok, I appreciate it is just basic but with GJW quoting me around £192 hmmm. Why don’t these companies recognise loyalty? Grr. Anyway, since this thread is a few months old, any other recommendations? Edit to say I’m a live aboard CC’er. Edited July 2, 2020 by Rambling Boater
PeterF
I have been with craftinsure for more than 10 years and whilst it has crept up over the years, it has never taken any large jumps like you mention.

I think there was a discussion a few years ago where someone who made a claim had to wait a while but was paid out eventually. Let's face it, none of them really want to pay out. My premiums have reduced over the years as I've never made a claim (touch wood). I'm happy with craftinsure and will carry on using them to insure my boat. 28 minutes ago, PeterF said: I have been with craftinsure for more than 10 years and whilst it has crept up over the years, it has never taken any large jumps like you mention. Your premiums have crept up? Mine have slid down. Been with them over 14 years. Edited July 2, 2020 by blackrose

Me too - no complaints, although they didn't like the risk of having external skin tank that was added when a new engine was put in a few years ago (by the previous owner).
Murflynn
I insure with Basic Boat - it is 3rd party liability only, limit £5million, very few conditions or questions, underwritten by one of the major players. About £80. All you need to be legal on the waterways.
Rambling Boater
Thanks for the replies. I realised after that this old thread was in the new boater section so I started a new thread in General boating.

This bumping up the price massively for exactly the same coverage is common even amongst some one time excellent marine insurers. It's too easy to value new over loyal customers. FWIW, we're with A-Plan and they haven't tried to gouge us yet - 3rd party and full liveaboard possessions coverage. Michael Stimpson was a pioneer in developing and writing liveaboard boating insurance, and although semi-retired, he may be open to a query by email if you could track him down. Alan de Enfield
Not boat insurance, but car insurance. Just received my renewal from LV, and it has increased by 'quite a bit' to £334. I went on to have a word with the meercats and ended up with identical cover with Saga at £184. I decided not to stay with LV.
