Mobile phone signal booster

We are not continuous cruisers so don't want to sign up to a MiFi contract and invest in that type of equipment, but would like to improve the mobile signal within the NB and use the data allowance on our phones. We are considering the one off investment in a mobile signal booster. Has anybody else done this? Any recommendations of which type of equipment?

Not legal to use on a boat, but I accept that the chances of getting caught are relatively small.

Are you sure? I thought the law changed, allowing certain approved units to be used.

There are certain types that are approved for use in cars, and certain types that are approved for use in houses.  I did not think there are was any approval for use in a boat.

edited to add, I see the ofcom like has already been provided.

Any idea why, wether this is for health reasons?

Because they’re mobile and can therefore interfere with other folk I guess. Caravans are equally excluded.

In-car ones are very weak and therefore unlikely to be of any use in a boat, although I can’t think of any reason why they’d not be permitted.

Maybe contact Ofcom and ask the question?

OK, so now we know these devices are illegal in a boat - is there any way that a mobile signal can be 'improved' on a boat? Legally.

No.

Assuming you are not going to be streaming mega amounts of data I would be tempted to buy a second hand mifi  such as

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F333490097793

and get a sim that has a yearly time limit something like

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Three-Mobile-Pay-Broadband-Data-Black/dp/B01M3VJ2B2

They do a 24gb/24month one as well.

This is what I do now I no longer live on the boat, my unlimited 3 data contract sim is in a router in the house instead of fibre broadband.

With the above mifi you have the best of both worlds as you can get an EE sim as well

The Three mifi should be unlocked however the EE one may well be locked to EE.

Strangely it mentions static caravan, which by the very name are not going to be mobile.

Yup. I really don’t know their reasoning. Perhaps house construction will limit any signal bleed more than mobile home construction?  But I’m purely guessing.
