My crimp has gone limp

Bizarre one this:

 

The crimp has totally dissolved into a soft verdigris paste. Seems to have done it really rapidly, it was conducting electricity yesterday!

 

Any ideas what may have caused this? It was taped up behind headlining carpet above a cooker. 

 

Oh, and the strange white stuff in the background is contact adhesion for the headliner, not an impressive mould culture

Damp, probably accelerated by a not great connection.

Keep the moisture out. Glue lined heat shrink tubing is your friend.

Thanks for that. I originally went for 2 way spade crimps to enable light fittings to be unplugged if need be. I'll get some glue lined heatshrink on order

You can get tube crimp connectors that you crimp then heat up its also heat-shrink

You can get ones that do that and solder the joint at the same time.

Lighter, match, very gentle application of a blow torch st a push.

As above, the cause is damp, plus current leakage to the hull, which has caused electrolytic corrosion of the the copper and tin.
