You were welcome to modify mine as it doesn't make sense anymore!

Now sorted, i thought i'd run out of time.

Having only just stumbled on this topic I can assure you that the thread makes very little sense at all. It’s apparent that someone must have posted something inappropriate and that several posters are all wound up about it but with the seubsequent fragmentation and edits it’s just a mess now.

Regardless, my condolences to his family.

That it is what happens when the thought police get involved with the offence-porn seekers.

My condolences too. If you missed it, someone made a "gallows humour" comment - the kind of comment that everyone does when standing around talking and sharing, a sort of comment that tries to make light of a tradegy.

But because it's the internet, and you can't see the eyes and body language of the person proffering the comment, these can come over hard and unfeeling on the forum. I'm certain it was not meant that way.

On the medium of forums, imo you have to take the sensitivity of your posted remark and multiply  by 5 to judge who may be reacting to it badly.

My comment was in regard to an unfounded assumption about the deceased that had nothing to do with humour.

I don't know if it is a poor use of English but the ambulance personnel twice refer to a patient, this could mean some unfortunate soul had decamped from a nearby medical facility, as normally a reference would be to a casualty - they only become a patient when treatment has started?

I think that's just standard ambulance speak. Still regarded as a patient even if no treatment given, and even if no 'patient' is found when we arrive on scene.

Condolences to his family and friends.

No, we have dealt only with this thread in response to reasonable requests from members.

Well to be completely accurate Athy, you hid my post without any input from members or other moderators, would you not agree?

How do you know what messages Athy might have received?

I infer that he received no message because my post, which he hid (and which remains hidden), was one I posted in response to one of his own. He PMed me within two minuets of me posting, saying that he had hidden it.

Don't think 2 minutes allows much time for consultation.

Fair comment, but i think it is safe to assume that the reaction was due to the nature of the previous post and any complaints about that.

I cannot argue with you because too many of the posts (including Athy's own, to which mine was a response) have been edited so the thread now makes little sense. While I could post screen shots of the originals, I feel that this would be to take the matter too seriously. So I'll leave it there.

Lest we forget, this thread is about a tragic fatality involving the loss of a human life, not about any particular forum member. Let us maintain a sense of proportion.

Posts involving speculation about the cause of the death were removed in response to views expressed by members.

No doubt we shall learn more after the authorities have concluded their investigations.

I do hope the complainers have gone en masse to the offices of The Manchester Evening News and banged on the desk with windlii and C&H handspikes. The rumour of the Canal Pusher was widely promulgated there.

I also think the likelihood of the relative of a random person who unfortunately drowned in the cut visiting this site is miniscule. I know members think its the Goto place for issues wet and watery, but the membership is tiny, compared even to the numbers of canal boaters. Carry on waving that virtuous flag, it will get you into heaven????

Totally agree. All this deleting of post speculating about the cause of death "in case a relative reads them" is a first class example of virtue signalling and getting offended on behalf of someone else. Pointless and silly.

If a relative of the deceased visits and objects that would be a reason to delete stuff, but so far that hasn't happened. Or has it, Team Mod?

In the unlikely event that it has, the beginning of the deletions preceded any such visit.  I posted a mild criticism of one of Athy's posts, he got in a huff and deleted my post, precipitating this farce.

Please re-read the advice given in post no.43. This thread is about a tragic accident which led to the loss of a life.

Oh, and no huffs were involved in the editing of this thread. Please try to be civil, as per our guidelines, and avoid such aggressive language.

I'm guessing the post numbers Athy's seeing are different to the us non mods because for him the deleted posts have just been hidden?

This is post number 50 for the benefit of Mr Athy.

That's from my memory of how it worked when I was on the moderating team - posts were never permanently deleted, just hidden.
