No without child benefit parents would have to send their kids down the red diesel mines so there would be a glut. Those that lose out on tax relief would send their kids down the white diesel mines so they don't get stained. 

Well that's a relief, I was feeling a little guilty about shoving kids in the cracking plant, only a little because I do need the fuel

China builds an ‘artificial sun’ that can hit temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius

Last month, we had reported that a team of scientists at the Chengdu Aerospace Science and Technology Microelectronics System Research Institute Co (CASC) in China has developed an “artificial moon”, 8 times brighter than the natural moon to replace streetlights in the country by 2020.

Now, a team at the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced that its Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) reactor, has hit a new temperature of reaching 100 million degrees Celsius.

The EAST has been dubbed as “artificial sun” since it replicates the process used by the sun to produce energy. It burns at 100 million degrees Celsius, which is over six times hotter than the core of the sun. The temperature of the real sun’s core is at around 15 million degrees Celsius. The state-of-the-art reactor is designed to turn hydrogen into cost-effective green energy.

“Scientists carried out the experiments on plasma equilibrium and instability, confinement and transport, plasma-wall interaction and energetic particle physics to demonstrate the long time scale steady-state H-mode operation with good control of impurity, core/edge MHD stability, heat exhaust using an ITER-like tungsten divertor,” the institute wrote in its announcement article.

Our sun generates light and heat energy by a process called nuclear fusion when two hydrogen nuclei combine to produce huge amount of energy. Scientists believe that nuclear fusion occurs at 100 million degrees Celsius. However, since these two hydrogen nuclei normally resist each other, it requires vast temperatures to overcome their opposing forces.

Hence, reaching over 100 million degrees Celsius is an important step as this is the minimum temperature required to create conditions that are suitable for nuclear fusion on Earth.

The aim of the EAST is to comprehend nuclear fusion process before building a full reactor and use it as an alternative source of energy on Earth in the future. The process promises more power and is far safer than fission, producing almost no dangerous nuclear waste.

“Nuclear fusion is arguably the best way for human beings to get energy. In terms of raw materials, deuterium and tritium required for nuclear fusion are almost inexhaustible in the ocean. Besides, nuclear fusion does not produce any radioactive waste, so it is extremely environmentally friendly,” said the researchers in a recently issued statement.

Matthew Hole, an Associate professor from the Australian National University told ABC News that the achievement was an important step for nuclear fusion science and could be the solution to global energy problems.

“It’s certainly a significant step for China’s nuclear fusion program and an important development for the whole world,” Dr. Hole said.

“The benefit is simple in that it is very large-scale baseload [continuous] energy production, with zero greenhouse gas emissions and no long-life radioactive waste.

The research group in charge of EAST say it accomplished this milestone through the use of various new methods in heating and controlling the plasma; however, they were able to maintain the record temperature for just around 10 seconds.

Dr. Hole also adds that the nuclear fusion reactors evade the risks related to the current nuclear fission reactors, which can be modified into dangerous weapons and are susceptible to possible meltdowns with catastrophic outcomes.

The artificial sun was designed and built by China back in 2006. EAST is 11 meters tall, has an 8 meters diameter and weighs 400 tons. According to China Daily, China becomes the first country to design and develop such an equipment on its own.

If this were developed and became a reality perhaps China would change from being ultra nationalistic and ambitious for world domination and become the largest scaled philanthropists in the history of mankind? Or perhaps not.

I paid, for other people to have kids, via Council Tax and Income Tax. I think each child at school costs £5K p.a.

No need for legislation: the fertility rate worldwide is dropping. For information, 2.3 is the replacement rate, where the population starts to shrink. In the UK we've been below that for some time.

Maybe they'll do what western companies would do and licence the technology for a fee. It would be the rational thing to do given the Chinese live on the same planet as us.

Getting back on topic for a moment.  I am not so naive as to believe that once we leave the EU the government will suddenly allow boaters unrestricted use of red diesel.  Every government loves tax revenue and will hang on to every penny they can.

 

I hope, and it is only a hope at the moment, that once we have left the EU, the government will quietly fail to implement the recent ECJ ruling which will force the fitting of separate tanks, or the use of white only.

 

Given the damage this ruling will do to the industry, as well as the cost to individual boaters, I live in hope.

Under current UK law we have the split declaration. The current government isn't going to be accepting any ECJ rulings about not complying with EU law, neither is changing the rules on leisure marine diesel going to be any priority for legislation. So we can expect the status quo to remain.

I would like to think so.  However, our government has already carried out a consultation on how best to implement the ECJ decision,  The result is due out early next year.  I just hope our civil servants have enough nouse to drag their collective feet until we are out!

The eu law simply forbids red in a propulsion tank.  Out of the eu we can ignore that requirement if we as a country so wish, BUT boats turning up in France or other eu ports are going to have a problem if they have red in a propulsion tank.  But that won’t be a problem for canal boats.

And, like Germany, that gives us a tricky problem: if that trend continues along with maintaining greater life expectancy and no significant extension in retirement age, then we will need immigration to help support our expectations. Angela Merkel supported accepting more than her country's share of the refugees a couple of years back on these grounds and that business was telling government that it had a significant labour shortage. Alas, it seems unlikely that a Boris government will have the ability to start telling the populace what they don;t want to hear . . .

As we are in effect remaining in the EU for another year, bound by their directives but with no voice in any debate, by the time the leaving has any effect it will almost certainly be too late. I suspect the

canal community will not be high on the government's agenda, unless it's looking for an opportunity to cut expenditure.

Remember what Japanese cars/ bikes were once called. (For the benefit of young people it was jap c##p). Already chinese output is ,on balance, as good as the UK produced in the 50s and 60s after which the UK gave up producing. They can only improve whilst we slip further back to join the 3rd world.

Not quite

We cease to be a member but still have to dance to their tune for another 11 months until we have agreed a deal.

So in reality its a year away.
