Somebody on this site recommended a book by this chap, it was probably a couple of years ago.

I have been casually looking for a copy, without success, ever since.

This morning I was searching (not for the first time) on my kindle when I suddenly thought the whole thing may have been a wind-up.

Could someone confirm that there is a book, for extra points (or pints) can you tell me where to find a copy.

Excellent, if somewhat thin book. I got my copy perhaps 20 years ago.

It explains why a boat behaves why It does in various circumstances, which once understood improves your boat handing. It also includes a variety of useful hitches.

Do you still have your rare unsigned first edition of Chris's book? ;)

Until I read this thread I had forgotten the name. As Chris Deuchar, he wrote a column on boat handling for one of the boatimags for quite a while. Each piece was illustrated by photos of him, woolly hat welded on to his head, taking his boat through various moves.  His column was always informative and I don't know why he stopped writing them - a change of editorial policy, perhaps?

It was for Waterways World when I was editor. The column only stopped because Chris thought he'd written about every aspect of boat handling that needed writing about. (But we did then get him to write a lovely series called "Boat Spotting" about historic narrowboats!)

Thanks for the information and for the reminder. Yes, now that you mention it, I remember 'Boat Spotting' too.

  • 1 year later...

For the record, the book is still available at around a fiver (despite an online book search giving prices from the USA of between £441 and £1185!) from a variety of sources - notably the Canalbookshop.uk at Audlem Mill (who, although currently out of stock, are expecting a delivery 'at the end of the month') and the boatshopbraunston.co.uk at Braunston Bottom Lock, who just told me they received copy(ies) 'a couple of weeks ago'.
