Heartland
Thomas Telford is often praised, and rightly so, for the completion of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, yet people tend to ignore his creation of the Water Line, which brought water from Bala Lake and the Dee Falls to the Ellesmere Canal. This created an ample water supply for the canal and the traffic that developed.
LadyG
He was a wonderful engineer, most of his work is still in everyday use. Constructions, like the Forth Road Bridge and the Erskine Bridge [last survivor of its design?], have hardly lasted any time without major repairs. He was a true pioneer.
