Engine problem

HI there, having some engine issues.

Engine was ok this morning and then we stopped to fill up with water. Upon restarting, there was a loud 'click' in gear whenever the engine turned over, getting faster with higher revs. The click eventually stopped but the engine continued to be very loud and with a loud rattle in gear. At the same time the boat seemed to be barely moving and higher revs didn't seem to get it to speed up. We moored and took a look inside. The loud rattle seems to come from around the gearbox when in gear. We already checked oil levels and the engine was serviced only a couple months ago. Engine is a Barrus shire.

Any ideas?

Time to check the weed hatch and make sure nothing is around the prop. A fouled prop will allow things like  earphone buds to bang on the hull as the prop rotates and more debris will load the engine and slow the boat. If the prop is clear try again, it might just be leaves packing around the prop that float off when you take it out of gear.

If the prop is definitely clear nothing hanging down where you can't see it) then come back and tell us. Also say if this happens in and out of gear or just in gear.

Cannot help with the gear box noise - only you know what it sounds like 'normally'.

If you think there is a 'rattle' get a long screwdriver (or mooring pin) and put the handle end into your ear (pressing against your ear bones).

TAKING CARE (as you need the engine running and the boat in gear)

'Dab' the other end of the screwdriver (or mooring pin) onto the gearbox, you will definitely hear if the rattle is in there as the vibration will travel up into your ear.

If not try the same 'dabbing' around the engine and see if it is (maybe) a broken piston etc etc etc.

From the video nothing sounds out of the ordinary. The propshaft is still turning, so that eliminates any catastrophic gearbox or driveplate failure.  A lack of acceleration would suggest you have something on the prop, and that includes a loose, possibly metallic, item which is hitting the uxter plate as it rotates. I had just this recently when I caught a shoulder bag - the metal rings on the strap were 'tinking' against the hull.

Time to open the weedhatch.

Thanks for coming back and telling us Danny, so many don't bother.

Well done Tony B :)

Without in or out of gear info it was the most likely thing to fit the symptoms. A dive plate failing would probably go quiet in gear with revs on.

Was it one of those pipe fenders dangling on a rope that some people insist on leaving down when cruising?

Exactly what we picked up in Braunston Tunnel last week.  Fortunately, we were just 300 metres from the exit and the following boat dragged us out.  Didn't half make a racket and lots of vibration!
