Loading up onto the truck today.

 

I knew she was heavily built GRP but with empty water tank, empty pump out tank, empty grey water tank but 3/4 full (2000 litres) fuel she weighed in at 20 tons according to his load cell.

 

Will be travelling at 100mm ground clearance to stay under the maximum allowable height of 16' 3"

Police permission granted but cannot move until after 6pm today, and not before 9am tomorrow.

Escort vehicle required.

I think they did the best thing to get going in daylight. 

The hold up to traffic was only a few minutes .. Quite interesting to watch them reverse out onto the road then pass the next central island on the wrong side. 

Traffic was light as its half term.

The police and local authority authorise the 'abnormal traffic movement.  In a previous life, (1980s), I used to run 'abnormals' into Stratford E London.  The Met insisted that we always ran against the rush hour flow so into Stratford pm and the do the delivery and loading, overnight in Stratford and then leave after 0930.

Tuesday (9:00am start ) - Keele to Bangor

Arrived at Dickies of Bangor and then 'dropped' in, 1 hour cruise at 7.2 knots (about 8mph) down the Menai Straits and into Port Dinorwic.

 

Port Dinorwic is a creek that was developed into a dock / wharf for loading boats with slate from the local mines, now developed as a very sheltered Marina.

Looks like a pleasant spot.

Didn't it once boast a narrow-gauge railway for the carriage of slate to the harbour? I don't think that any of it has been preserved, though one or two of its engines may have been.

EDIT: just checked. It was called the Padarn Railwy, and part of it has been rebuilt as a tourist route.

The Dinorwic quarries, railways and harbour was an extensive system in North Wales.

Note that many of the steam engines were and are being preserved. The Bala Railway regularly use their's to haul passenger trains, as does the Llanberis Lake Railway. Some that were exported have now been returned to the UK.
