Selling Stuff Using Free Online Advertisers

Featured Posts

Hiya,

I'm sure that most of us at some time have tried selling stuff using free online advertisers like Gumtree, Preloved etc., mostly without any problems whatsoever & that's been the same for me in the distant past. However, recent attempts have been frustrating to say the least, not because nobody wants to buy for whatever reason, but what seems to be a recent phenomenon where you get an enquiry, you respond & then hear nothing more.

For example, recently I've tried selling a double bed, 3 chests of drawers, sofa with armchair & a TV unit, the only thing that was actually sold was the bed, all the rest was either kept or donated to charity. What happened with most of the unsold items that enquiries via Gumtree in my case, is that I received a positive response that included a request to email direct giving an email address. Not wishing to give out my own email, I replyed via Gumtree with my own response giving up a mobile number for the enquirer to call to arrange collection and/or ask any further questions etc. Not one of those enquirers responded & no sale ocurred, leaving me to suspect that they were not genuine enquiries but either scams to obtain my email or traders simply fishing & moving on.

Is it me, am I being paranoid or is this common practice today? Maybe those who enquired simply changed their minds, but with it happening with 3 out of the 4 items, I hope you'll forgive me if I'm just a teeny bit suspicious.

What do you think & have you experienced this sort of thing yourself?

As an aside & talking of selling stuff, how come you can't update or edit an ad in CWDF? I'd like to update the description for my Eu20i that's for sale on here.

No you're not being paranoid.  I guard my information, don't give out my email, don't use store cards, don't take money out of ATMs, don't engage with cold callers and you know the best "don't " of all?  Don't have any problems.....

just bought a 2hp 2 stroke Johnson outboard from year 2000, as new, literally hardly used.   £150 on gumtree - delivered from Gloucester by the seller.

the equivalent on ebay would be £250 or more.

been listed for some time - I was the first person to enquire and make a serious offer.

I love gumtree.

last year we bought collected 50 box tree hedging plants 18" high from a local address where they were remaking the front garden.  The husband wanted £150 but the wife had put them on separately for 'free to take away'.  He was not amused.  :)  They've been in the ground for 16 months are are all thriving.  About £500 worth from a dealer.
