MoominPapa
From the CRT stoppages mailing list. MP. Lock 1, Top Lock to Lock 1, Top Lock on Hertford Union Canal Monday 16 September 2019 15:00 until further notice Type: Navigation Closure Reason: Water resources Original message: Following the long period of mainly dry weather, flows of water from the river tributaries that feed the Grand Union Canal remain low. This is having a direct impact on the water levels on the Paddington Arm, the Regent’s Canal, and the Herford Union Canal. Our water management team has also recorded that water is frequently being run through locks, including Hampstead Rd, overnight which is further depleting the water supply. This means that currently there isn’t enough water in central London for navigation. We have therefore taken the difficult decision to temporarily close navigation so that water levels can return to normal. The following locks will be closed from Monday 16 September 2019: Grand Union - Lock 90 Top Lock only. Regent’s - Hampstead Rd Lock 1A and 1B Regent’s – Kentish Town Lock 3 Regent’s – Mile End Lock 9 Hertford Union – Lock 1 We are monitoring the situation constantly and will reopen the locks as soon as practically possible. Our aim is to strike a balance between making the waterways as accessible as possible for boaters while mitigating against future risk and we appreciate your patience during this unprecedented time. Mike on the Wey
"Our water management team has also recorded that water is frequently being run through locks ..." That is something I have heard via Facebook groups - (generally) liveaboard boats sit on the bottom in a low pound, so they run water through from the pound above. It just moves the problem elsewhere. But I'm surprised that the long pound is low - that is a huge amount of water in a 25 mile pound.

magnetman
The long pound is down about 6 inches A lot of water missing. Obviously not a problem for a well maintained canal but... I was last boat through top lock yesterday afternoon after which all top paddles and gates chained up. Boater Sam
Not enough water in London for the Airbnb flats then? Or the mooring hoggers? Hope some of them see sense and move for a change.
Dave123
Saw this on Facebook today...shows the GU/River Brent in Brentford (opposite the GSK building). Pound is seriously low and boats grounded! On 16/09/2019 at 22:42, Mike on the Wey said: "Our water management team has also recorded that water is frequently being run through locks ..." I've also heard rumours the trip boats based around Camden do the same thing...including completely emptying one of the short pounds there to act as an impromptu dry dock! They have got hold of the same key CRT use to padlock the locks shut. Apparently.? Edited September 18, 2019 by Dave123
