Does anyone know who has put a padlock on the gate giving access to Asda?

we moored our boat to go shopping as per usualthis morning and had to climb over the fence which is doable but difficult as we are oap’s

this ia all wrong we have always gone through this gate.

City Council, It was in the local paper a few weeks back, concerned with safety with leaving the gate unlocked, as someone fell in the river through the unlocked gate back in the summer.

Cheers mate

i figured it would be something like that and to some extent I agree but feel that a different solution would be more helpful

but then I bet people would leave it unlocked - people always do....

environmental agency could put a lock on it that opens with the keys we use to access other things on the canal and river like the locks but those boxes are often left unlocked- it’s a shame

thanks

I hope this isn't another 'Manchester lock' thing.

You just never known with councils, they have to be seen doing something when this type of thing happens. Less than a 100 yards up river on both side there is no fence at all along the riverside paths.

You can buy a padlock for a fiver, fit spring, Fit Yale Lock, maintain hundreds

Maintain hundreds? Are you meaning £s?

Problem with fitting padlocks is someone can leave them open, so the issue is still there. Even if it retains the key in the open position, you can shut the padlock away from the bolt or hasp/staple.

Thing with using a spring to shut the gate is someone could be injured and the Council sued. It is the view of both EA and the City Council that boats should not be moored there in the first place. They do have a point, for less than 100 yards down river is a over a mile and a half of visitor moorings along the embankment. More space than the rest of the riverside visitor moorings on the Nene joined together.

Yeahbut.......

Its dead handy for a quick Morrisons shop. We stopped there briefy earlier this year.

And boats mooring, or not mooring, there has nothing to do with people falling in.

Its a seperate argument.

ETA That is not to say the visitor moorings aren't good. They are. A super sucky pump out, well two off actually, and FREE too!

Good 25 minuite bus ride to the nearest Morrisons.
