I appreciate that we're all good at different things, but if he doesn't have a multimeter or understand that he can start his engine with a set of jump leads from the domestic bank; and he has to get his mum to try to sort out the problem and call an electrician, then somehow I doubt it.

There seems to be an idea prevalent in the world that technical knowledge goes with testosterone. It doesn't, it goes with skinned knuckles and either self study or training. Mere ownership of a boat doth not a mechanic make. Give the professional the respect of recognising that there's more to it than reading a book.
