I didn’t know SI units like the metre were ambiguous!!

Not sure what an SI is, but "m" after a measurement can certainly be misunderstood, as it's the accepted abbreviation for both miles and metres.

SI units are the internationally accepted units in science, like litres, volts and amps etc.

But a centimetre isn't a accepted unit

I think that’s correct, as the metre is the accepted one, millimetres and centimetres are just fractions of a unit.

I believe every thing was done to the plus or minus 3. So kilometres are to the 3 millimetres -3. And centi breaks this approach

I work in construction and have used metres and millimetres all my working life with the exception of dealing with Italian marble factories who use centimetres!

Athy, You never cease to amaze me

Thank you so much! One does one's best.

I have never been on the science side, so obviously I am not au fait with scientific jargon.

Athy, You never cease to amaze me with the things you don't know! Especially as SI is an (internationally accepted) abbreviation of the French term Système international (d'unités).

Surprises me as well, he is quick to criticise my use of a word in another thread but seems to lack a general level of knowledge of many subjects.

I have many virtues, but omniscience is not in their number.

By "criticise" I think you mean "make a humorous comment about". Humour is permitted on CWDF.

Eh? Not that I've noticed. How do you reckon that, then?

Another good answer. Rise above.
