Mooring for the Tardebigge Flight.

Looking forward to doing the Tardebigge locks in the next couple of weeks. I note it is difficult to moor within the flight so planning to moor after Stoke Top Lock and visit the Queens Head. Is there usually room at the Stoke Pound visitor moorings?

I’ve moored there lots of times and never found it to be full. There are places you can moor within the flight and on the bend between locks 33 and 34 (that’s 5 locks up) is one of them. There is a good sheet piled wall and it’s a short walk back to the Queen’s Head.

Yes, last time that we went up the flight, we set off at 5.30am to discover we'd been beaten away by over an hour by a very slow single-hander who had only managed 3 locks before we caught up with him, and at the same time we were caught up by another Forum member who had started at the same time as us but from further back. We arranged that we (2-handed) would pass him then leave the locks empty behind us with bottom gates open, and they (also 2-handed) would close the top gates behind him. As a result he made his fastest trip ever and the 3 boats reached the top by mid morning.

If you make an early start and are the first going up the flight you should find most of the locks in your favour. They seem to empty out overnight. Most of the bottom gates leak more than the tops. This does mean very early though...

Some of the pounds have a habit of emptying overnight too. That’s a risk if you set off early. CRT operatives visit at 0800 to check and run water down if necessary. Vollockies will arrive between 0800 and 0900 at their cabin just below half way. They do cover the entire flight (although not always the top lock) and on recent trips I have had good assistance.
