Hi Sorry but me AGAIN!!!!!.The guy opposite me has gone away for 3 week holiday!!!!Just my luck..      Anyway I do have a quandary re what this engine is it does say 2500 on Raw Water header and on engine block ,The original fuel pump looks small but has functioned ok,I ordered a new one as had slight leak and all the screws where a bit shot, plus it did not have a manual lift .So £25/30 it was a no brainer.    I offered it up a new one but at time of ordering thinking it was a 1.5 so 1.5 was what I ordered ,when i went to fit, it seemed the flange was not correct[I did not realize it was canted to one side] I put this down to it being a 1.5 so as i was now thinking it was  a 2.5 pump i reordered, the new 2.5 turned up yesterday and that wont fit,its way to big. But now the old one is off i can see I the new 1.5 will fit after all,So I was confused before now I'm totally baffled. But in my mind the 2.5 would be a Bigger Pump as is one on right but that definitely won't fit......So will fit the new one same size as the one removed tomorrow. SO is it 2.5 or 1.5?????????????????1452116737_20190824_1851271.jpg.c5e4673fd99b695ecc4b21d856dd2f10.jpg

The size and shape of the internal lever arm that works on the camshaft eccentric is also important. You will see the middle one is totally different to the other two.  The top and bottom ones are also exceptionally easy to fit with the lever on the wrong side of the camshaft so they can't be tightened up - actually you can but you the wreck the pump. The secret with these is to put the lever into the block in an upwards direction while pulling it towards the block.

There is another similar thread over the last week and that OP posted photos. This one shows where I think you will find the engine number.

Although in this case an aluminium strip with the number had been taken off. You may have to clean a load of rust off.

You can not take random numbers off random engine parts and hope to identify the engine. As I said  before the 2.2 and 2.5 are very similar. They might even be so close the cylinder heads can be interchanged. I also said that yours is not an official marinisation so if a part made to marinise a different engine fits the person who did the job may have used it.

I don't think that you can go by pump size, since BMC went pop replacement lift pumps seem to have been sourced from all over the world and they do differ in design with the only constant being the internal operating lever size and shape (not even its construction material) and the size and shape of the mounting flange.

How many more times - IT IS NOT A 1.5. The rocker cover is wrong, the injection pump is wrong, and the fuel filter is at the wrong end of the engine. Oh, and someone said it had a Taxi rocker cover. London Taxies never fitted a 1.5. Those 12V glow plugs I would suggest 2.5 but again it s not definitive because nowadays it seem 12V pugs are supplied to fit 2.2s but the boss in the head look smaller than the 2.2 version to me.

Tony once again thank you so much for your wise words/information. Just off now to fit my new shiny fuel pump into to my 2 5 BMC Engine. Entering the cam in a upward motion.Cheers Nigel

with the lever sliding tight up the inside of the crankcase.

Fitted the new fuel pump works fine had to refit the lever mechanism as the original one didn't have one does but it does have a lever to prim but a bit hard to operate, but drilled another hole in lever to connect the priming arm to the push wire plunger from the other new one (the 2.5) this works fine now.But alas injection pump is still hunting and inducing a spasmodic engine  beat.took her out just past harbour arm this morning it just started hunting ....This was  after 30mins under load at 3/4 running speed in reverse securely tied to pontoon......So will send of pump to JC Isleworth to get it refurbished/replaced £325 but if it sorts it I will be happy.

It should be a mechanically governed DPA pump, unlike the hydraulic ones on 1.5s that do hunt when fuel starts to get a bit short, so I would be more inclined to think about causes for fuel starvation that getting the pump overhauled. Anyway a decent FIE specialist should be able to pop ii on the test bench and check it out for far less than the overhaul price. I don't know how obliging your specialists are but if you ask nicely they might let you watch and explain what you are seeing.

When diesel "hunt" it is known as surging and "spasmodic engine  beat" suggests to me something a bit more rapid than surging. Any chance you have a faulty injector that gets sticky as it warms up?

The whole thing is a bloody minefield!!!!!!!I will ask them to bench test it before they refurb.I did use them 25 years ago and they did a good job ,they are still today so they must be doing something right!
