Sterling AB12160 A2B Charger Issue

Featured Posts

Hi All

My Sterling AB12160 has stopped charging my batteries..... Or so it seems.

No LEDS are on. No voltage detected on the ALT input

Now the issue is the 2 x 80Amp Alternators are wired in to the A2B together to get 160Amps

Could it possibly be one alternator failed a whilst ago and I didn't notice...... Now the second one has failed I have lost everything.

Anybody any experience of this or similar?

Thank you for reading

Take the AtoB out of line. Easy to do. Just connect the Alt leads to the two leads going to the batteries (individually of course) and check the voltage on each of the battery banks.

I have an AtoB but never seen a problem with no LEDS.

So just link each alternater straight to batteries.

I should comment the rev counter isn't working either.... That comes from alternator too I think ??

No rev counter is a big clue, unless its wiring problems.

You need to connect the alternators to batteries so that they are isolated by the isolation switches though.

Before doing too much else make sure the multiplug(s) on the engine wiring harness are clean, tight and in good order. If the warning lamp cable is open circuit then at least one alternator may not energise and depending upon how Beta wired it the other one may not as well.

Does the charge warning lamp come on with the ignition and stay on? If the answer is no then an open circuit in the warning lamp cable(s) is a distinct possibility.

I agree.

Is it a beta 43?

If the multi plug has a bad connection the the AtoB will not power up as there will likely be no voltage from the alternator.

Last time the connector went bad on me the engine wouldn't turn off and the rev counter stopped working. Just fiddle with the plug for another 6 months service.
