Don’t moor near my canalside house

Featured Posts

So these signs had me a bit miffed last night with their cheek. Wondered if anybody had any back story that gave them some context or had moored there before.

I googled the cottage to see if it had been brought up before and I think the cottage was up for sale recently.

To me its basically the same as putting up a sign in my window that asks people to respect my property by not walking past.

The dog related sign is on the garden fence, then every window at the house has the note in it. Finally the No Mooring sign in the garden.

Located just south of Berko

There are several about. A particularily obnoxious individual has similar signs on the towpath outside his bungalow near to Barton turns marina. Take no notice and moor there.

Yer, I'm tempted to move down to there and moor up for a few days. But I would be going out of my way just to annoy them! I've decided to move back up to north of Leighton Buzzard and spend the end of summer up there

I think I was moored and iced in outside that house for 11 weeks in 2009.😁

Looks like it was sold in 2014.

And I also stumbled upon a Hypnotherapy business being run from there

There's been regular reports of some tosser in Mile End, London that also feels the same about boaters mooring opposite his house. I believe he's been known to throw rocks out of his balcony. Makes a claim that the CRT have agreed that boaters can't moor there. Although the towpath wardens have confirmed this is a load of shit.

I must say he's very brave shouting abuse from the safety of his balcony and lobbing stuff at boaters rather than going down and speaking to them face to face...

They should do free sessions for boaters and sneak in ‘you will violently vomit if you moor in from of my house’

I must admit, it's an OK place to stop. Some parking close by and plenty of it so I dont need to risk scratching the oxidation off the van as I bury it in the hedge. No tree coverage so will get solar. Decent bank and towpath isnt muddy. Just before a winding hole. Downside is that the railway is unobscured, so noisey

The lady in the lefthand house (viewed from the towpath) has been there for years, if you look opposite there is a winding hole! When I had the barge I used to have fun, I regularly sideswiped the idiots that moor there.

I couldn't remember if it was one house or two, but come to think of it, the No Mooring sign in the garden didn't have the notes in the window.

I agree though, the more southerly house is generally within the turning circle and I wouldn't moor outside that one.

If it's not an official Waterways' notice it means nothing.

If it is but there's no safety reason stated like Embankment or obvious privacy reason such as at Ansty  which leaves boats on line with bedroom windows, then complain and request an explanation as setting precedents is an unhealthy way forward.

This kind of thing crops up regularly and we usually remark that if you don't like boats and/or canals then don't live there.

Even if the house was built before the cut (and there aren't many of those around) then you moved in after the navigation was built unless you're nearly 3 hundred years old.

There was a boat moored outside it when I was last in Berko during the beast from the east...

Reminds me of another house by Cole Mere on the Llangollen with simillar signs, the house is on the offside but the signs say no mooring opposite...And opposite are official 48h visitor moorings!Enjoyed a day moored there trying to get the occupants of the house to wave hello😂

I think its ok for house owners to have no mooring signs outside their houses.....as long as....

they apply to CRT and do a full mooring application (not easy and expensive)

get an approved mooring and pay the annual cost

choose not to put a boat there.

or maybe they should pay twice the annual cost?

Does that mean they can move their sign to other houses from time to time so long as they don’t exceed 14days??

Has he got a garden by the house? Perhaps he’d like some free compost if any passing boat happened to have some...

Even though there is no legal weight to these signs, i'd still be wary about mooring there and find them a little sinister. A similar situation to those in streets that put cones or bric a brac outside their house, i've known people who have parked in such a place and returned to find their vehicle scratched or vandalised in some way.
