Sources of S/H JP2 Spares

We appear to have a little bit missing off our engine - The pawl off the cold start device is not there.

That is how it was described to me but others may call it something dfferent! The pictures may help:

It is a dooferator that goes on this bit:

The parts manual shows the bits that are missing:

It has made me realise that we do not really know of many sources or enthusiasts with these engines and it would be a good plan to get to know a few

If anyone has such parts tucked away down the back f their sofa and wish to sell them to us please get in touch. Or if you are aware of a company or individual who may have them and be willing to sell them to us then we are all ears

Looks more like a fairly simple make exercise.  Next show (Alvecote?) find someone with a JP fitted with missing bit.  It will be the same for a JP3 or4 Measure up.  Copy.

Wandering round talking to other owners is always a good idea.  Building a network will usually be the quickest way to an urgently needed item.  Don' t just do the boat shows as similar enthusiasts are to be found on the Stationary Engine line at most summer events.

For commercial bits Marine Power Services, or our own Richard and Sue. Possibly Sleeman and Hawken.

Ebay is always worth a look, for any or all of NOS spares, Indian copies or engines for spares. Because the JP was  modular to some extent even a JP 6 can be a handy source of heads for example.

Also worth looking at the mechanical tat stalls at boat jumbles, autojumbles, hot fog fairs and the like.

For bearing remetalling, specialist things lke injection pumps and need to be made bits, mags like Old Glory or the vintage tractor stuff have ads from suitable suppliers, as does the FER website.

Finally, search engines may help, or at least open up a rabbit hole to go down.

MES Midlands, (obviously).

I suspect John Regan also still has a good number of JP parts.

When we were trying to source original, (rather than nasty Indian copy) HA parts, I collected quite a list of names of potential contacts, but in the end didn't call many of them, because I let "my man" do the looking.  Not sure I still have names, but will dig in my pile of papers once back at the house.

Sadly some bits coming from genuine Lister distributors can clearly be demonstrated as being sub-standard compared to what the original should have looked like.  Unlikely to be a problem for many parts, but pistons, bores, rings, bearings, etc are a worry, if not the pukka thing.

Whilst it’s desirable to have you won’t realky notice any ill effects if you don’t have it....bar some black smoke if you open the throttle right up when it’s running.

Marine, and in good running order. No work needed. Can be seen running in narrowboat and taken for test run.

Are you interested? PM me if you are and I'll put the two of you in touch and your can take it from there.

I have no personal interest or gain from the a sale, should it happen. Sorely tempted to buy it myself!

If it needed work I’d have it as a spares engine for mine but it sounds like it’s far too good therefore far too expensive for that...twin marines in good condition now fetch daft money. I suspect my engine alone is worth far more than the boat it’s in if you know what I mean!

You ll probably find it in the sludge in the bilge,if you grope around a bit.......If you never run the engine on full noise ,you will never need the stop.....it just limits rack travel ..........incidentally,these externally tamperable excess fuel devices have been illegal for many years, due to the potential for black smoke.

I wouldn't touch anything sourced from Regan.

I have just realised I never got back to reply to this thread, thanks a millon to everyone who has responded. We have now sourced the part but it has been useful as we now have some suggested sources for parts should we find we need stuff in the future

Come and have a chat at Alvecote. I'm on "Cleveland"  Jack
