Visitor moorings @ Brighouse

Having arrived at Huddersfield and been as unimpressed arriving by canal as we were the last time we worked here we will be moving off tomorrow after a night outside the university....there’s no available mooring from here to Sainsbury’s as it looks like they are now all permanent boats from Aspley marina despite it saying visitor moorings for 72 hrs...the boards over windows don’t inspire me either!

Brighouse looks like a decent run for a day and it has a Sainsbury’s for restocking the galley etc...it also looks like there are bollards outside it...does anyone know if you can moor overnight here or are there other visitor moorings between Brighouse & Huddersfield that are safe/pleasant for an overnight. We will be winding at Brighouse probably and coming back onto the Huddersfield. Going back to Harborough via the Trent still seems a gamble given the weather forecast.

There are moorings at the end of the Huddersfield, just through the floodgates of the C&H going east. Shop at the garage. Kirklees cut is quiet and scenic but if the river comes up you are stuck ( we had to walk down to Cooper Bridge for supplies. Brighouse is fine, stayed there lots, both next to sainsbury and round the corner just past the Sani point. Visitor moorings in the bottom pound are OK too.

That’s very helpful! Thanks. I’m keeping an eye on the river levels and the forecast.  I’ve heard the C & H can come up quickly!!

Well spent a lovely night in Brighouse basin....much nicer than Huddersfield and with everything you need close at hand! Bit of a shock to see boats moving after being on the Huddersfield and using a hand spike for the first time has been an adventure....off for a look round town today.

Don't know how long you're staying in Brighouse, but if you're still there tomorrow, you shouldn't miss the Market Tavern, a relatively new micropub with superb beer and a great atmosphere (closed Mon & Tues).  It's errr, next to the market.  Failing that if you're not a Wetherspoons snob, then the Brighouse one is very impressive.  I like Brighouse - as you say everything to hand and a thriving High Street.

Funny you should say that....we were thinking of maybe taking advantage of the 72 hour mooring just to visit the Market Tavern...we are big micropub fans! Bad planning arriving on a Monday!

We possibly seeked solace in spoons last night and as you say a most Impressive conversion....plus all guest ales including 2 darks was £2.09/pint...factor in our 50p CAMRA vouchers and it was a cheap evening.....finishing with fishcake & chips from Blakey’s near the market which was so good we may be going back this evening.
