Rochdale Nine (Lock 87)

Featured Posts

We have been stuck here for a couple of hours waiting for the gallant lads from CRT to rescue us.  We are on our way up and the leak under the tail gates is so bad that it won't make a level.

The people are doing their thing now.  They are running water down from the pound above lock 84.  It remains to be seen what they will do when they find that they, too, can't get it to make a level.  We wonders.  Yes, we wonders.

Wait till they drop an 8" wave over the head gates ...

Still, it's a nice place to be stuck on a Friday night! :icecream:

Acksherly we were expecting to be in Thomas Telford Basin by  4 o'clock.

Friday night just here doesn't give me huge amounts of joy.

When we did the HNC we had a bit of trouble with one lock for the same reason.  As we were waiting a passer by told us it was a frequent issue and on more than one occasion BW had resolved it by tying a rope from the gate to their van and yanking it open.

Didn't they make rather an 'ash of it?

Through now and moored up in Thomas Telford Basin.

Just to add a little excitement to the day as we were making the turn into the Ashton we picked up a duvet on the prop.  That took a good 20 minutes to remove!

Back on to the Rochdale tomorrow and off we go to Sowerby Bridge.

You can't leave us in suspense  like that!  How did they get you through?

First thoughts are:

1. Flood the lock over the gates to force a level

2. Brute force, lots of people or a vehicle and a rope or a Spanish windlass

3. Drop the lock and keb the bottom cill clear

oooh, the Rochdale Nine is pretty tame compared with the next bit. Start really early and get up through Newton Heath as early as you can to the safety of the Rose of Lancaster, but if you are running late the Boat and Horses is also a good place to stop for the night, Next day up the Slattocks locks, a nice flight of locks, and the refurbished Ship inn at the top is a good place to stop, a bit poshed up but still a good local pub. Rochdale is not nearly as bad as some people say.

OK, on the way down the boat did rise up out of the water like it was running over a submerged elephant, and whilst trying to reverse off we did get a pretty big prop fouling that took over an hour to fix. On the way up we got stuck in the silted top lock right at school chucking out time but a gang of local thugs were quite helpful.

Just had a little incident at Lower Heyford so its pretty bad in the genteel south too, and at least one can afford to celebrate a successful passage  with a couple of pints up North.

...............Dave,

I did spot your beer post ... you could always share a half down South and reminisce about the days you could have three pints for this price ( or June as it's known!)

If you are lucky the contingent from the historic Narrow Boat Club have already done a fair amount of dredging for you, as well as pulling out quite a few of the push bikes and shopping trolleys.

The two hardest days boating I have  ever done were Manchester to Rose of Lancaster  and then Rose of Lancaster to  Manchester.  The return day extended to 13 and a half hours, and in any more "normal" boat might have taken half that.

They ran lots of water down to fill the pound above then they came and opened the paddles and used just tow chaps to open the gate.  Did I feel foolish? Yes, but the boats that we crossed with said that they had spent two hours getting through with CRT's help so we sort of assumed that we couldn't get through sensibly.

Same happened to us going down nearly two weeks ago. It seemed to me the leak was not so much under the gates as between them - they didn't seem to get closer than 2 inches apart. The CRT man pulled a carpet off the bottom cill and then with both top paddles open two of us just managed to open a top gate. I heard later that boaters in front of us got through without calling CRT out, but needed four boaters to open the gate.

Monday night in our case, so not so lively, but it was about 9.00 pm by the time we got through.
