UPDATE  I found this thread lurking in my email, and am now revising paint completion date from six weeks to  err........ six months! Weather has been mad, the old paintwork needed a lot of sanding, and I had a few experiments with colours.  Side 1 is now grey, three shades of grey, almost finished, but not quite. Side 2 is getting a quick rub down and will be finished asap, there are a few rusty pits on the roof, but overall pretty clean, it's had a quick coat of white. The boat is a 57 ft NB by Tim Tyler.

 

For those who like more detail: Exterior, I will have used about 12 litres of Rustoleum Combi Colour, one litre of International Interdeck circa 1995. Two litres of Rustoleum paint stripper to remove overpaint on anodised window frames, mushroom vents, door vents,  and other artefacts, inside and out.  1 litre Aldi metal paint gloss. Five rolls of hi tech masking tape [I had a few design iterations].

 

Interior [ mainly  london white ] 2.5 litres of undercoat and 4 litres of top coat. Four Rustoleum aerosols: Hard Hat [stained mushroom vent shafts], Blue-Grey to cover the interior doors and their mouldings, engine room looks like an engine room now rather than a 1950's pantry.

150 detail sanding sheets, 20 orbital sanding sheets, two litres of white spirits, two litres clean spirit", one litre special thinners [Rustoleum].

I have a tin of Yellow, and one of Red, and a jar of anti slip left over.  I have spent £350 on materials. £50 on tools. £50 on personal protection. Not far off estimate, the interior has used more paint than expected, I am now finishing off with B&Q quick dry satin, about £10 per litre, two [more] litres should do it.

 

PS I used Rustoleum Combi Color from Rawlins Paints [Leeds], they have an excellent technical service and were confident I would get a decent result on a less than perfect surface, and so it has proved. The main problem was finding good rollers, the trick being to get the correct amount of paint on the roller every time, I used 4 inch foam from East Coast Sales.

I remember it too, she filled up the mushroom vents with a whole tube of silicone sealant slapped on by hand?

Her name was Max! by the end when she flounced of it was Mad Max, to be honest having met her she was ok, I went up to Skipton to give her a driving and lock lesson, then went onto Scotland, she seemed to have the hang of it after a couple of hours...................but the boat was very black to say the least?

Aye, I don't think I ever posted in that infamous thread. Something didn't sit right from the start, with me. BUT 5 people off of the forum did (try to) help her by visiting, and lots of others on the forum. She threw it all back, and accused one of those visitors of inappropriateness, which I think is very unfair.

When I met her she had had a No 2 haircut!!! short wasnt the word, but as I said she was ok with me.

Why has someone chainsawed two mature trees from that narrowboat roof?  They must've taken ages to grow.......
