Gas in Selby

As the so-called Selby boat centre no longer sells gas or diesel (or anything, really) despite notices to the contrary, I'm looking for gas in Selby.  The only Calor dealer (Fairfax) is a fair trek from the canal with no transport.  DAK if anywhere else sells Calor gas?  I've looked on the Calor site (the boatyard is still listed).

I was looking for diesel in Selby last year and called Selby Boat Centre to find out they no longer sold it.  They suggested for diesel the petrol station on the road close to them, perhaps they also sell gas?  Other than that if you are going up the Ouse then York Marina is very narrowboat friendly with a long service pontoon on the river.  Their diesel is also a good price (for a river) and any split.

H, I'm looking or a gas safe boaty fitter@ Is the Selby guy around?

The Gas Safe official site is not helping.

It depends on who you mean by "the Selby guy." Simon Banks is still around, sort of, at Selby boatyard but he can be difficult to catch and I don't know whether he still does gas fitting. There is also Dave at Selby boatyard of DB Marine but I don't know whether they have a gas safe fitter.

There is no chandlery or gas or diesel at Selby Boat Center any more.

How things change. I remember the late Dougie Banks proudly showing his chandlery, telling me that if someone wanted something he didn't stock then he ordered 2 as someone else would inevitably want one at some time. And he wanted to be known as having the best stocked chandlery in the area.

Simon will try and source whatever you need and get it delivered as soon as possible, recently had our boat blacked there (2 pac) and received brilliant service from him and Dave at DB Marine.

Just to confirm and to avoid doubt, we no longer sell gas, as WE have to buy it from Fairfax as they are the regional supplier. As such it is not financially viable to stock or sell as they will sell it to you at the same price they do to us.

In regards to diesel, unfortunately the volume of sales are not present on such a quiet canal. Diesel has a limited storage time, that along with the amount of regulation and reporting imposed by HMRC again no longer make this viable from a business perspective.

We do still have a chandlery although much smaller than in previous years, but can still order anything if required. Again due to a change in customer buying habits and most people now preferring to buy online a stand alone chandlery is not viable and with sub 10% margins on many products would hardly cover its own costs.

We are still a fully working boatyard offering a full range of specialist engineering services, from full spray painting, blacking, engine servicing, plumbing, heating & electrical work, welding & replating, new builds and refits, in fact anything related to a boat.

Please feel free to contact us if you require anything.

best Regards Simon

But doesn't that apply to any boatyard?  It's not as if gas goes off like you say diesel does. Fairfax is so far from the canal that passing boaters without transport will find it very difficult to access Fairfax. Boaters coming into a well-stocked chandlery to pay for their gas will frequently buy something else - I know I did several years ago when I was last there.

Also, I recently got gas at the canalside garage at Boroughbridge for less than I paid Fairfax.  Are they selling at a loss, then?

Hi,

you have to to understand that the majority of our gas sales (maybe 95%) were to non boaters who would not buy from us once Fairfax started selling gas In selby as they were cheaper.

we maybe only sold two or three bottles a month to boaters, so again this is not viable as a business with storage and insurance costs to hold gas on site.

i am sorry that you are inconvenienced by us not selling gas, but we are at the end of the day a business which is there to make money not a charity, and unfortunately gas & diesel sales are no longer a viable business proposition with the demand provided by the traffic on the selby canal.

regards Simon
