Whilst I know which Trent lock you mean I reckon most  boaters on here will not!! I think that looks nearer to meadow lane lock though isnt it?

I always thought the pontoon before you got to the lock (on the RH side as you come upstream) was the 'landing stage coming off the Trent'.

 

The one shown is 'around the corner' from the lock and usually full of long-term moorers, (maybe that's why the work-boat had to moor against the 'wall').

This is the pontoon before the lock , the 48 hour moorings are just past the lock.

OK - my mistake, I thought (from the photo) the lock was on the left 'behind the wall'

That's an interesting question.   In the pictures there is a reasonably long bowline attached quite high on the wall.  If we think the stern line was tied to the (floating) pontoon as well, then that should have been safely moored.

 

Obviously something went wrong though!

No it was because of idiot boat owner , it was not safe to be used , it was rotten with holes in it . 

He was told it was unsafe and took no notice .
