You can walk into Bardney village from the floating pontoon at Bardney top. Just follow the flood bank. Nice butchers there at the top of the hill and a Coop if you need supplies.

they have got a Chinook dropping big bags of ballast and concrete into the gap, I don't think they wanted to send anything heavy along the bank in case more of it gave way.

Anyone headed this way on the south oxford then Nell bridge is passable with ease, rivers up a tad but nowt much. Just thought I would mention it as if it realy rains it gets totaly impassable as many know. Just sayin like.

You need to do quite a long wade from the pontoon to the dry flood bank!

 

We can get the lock gates open, and the river below is full but not fast, but the bridge is no go. Measured it with a shaft and all we need about another 30cm to get Red Wharf under. Damn.

Back to Fiskerton or Washingborough then?

 

There are shops in Washingborough at the top of the village. The Ferry Boat is a nice pub as well.

 

Water is over the banks on some parts of the Fossdyke now. Pyewipe moorings and lower moorings at Saxilby are under water.

Nothing like that. This is fenland. The rivers are just filling up and only flow at the rate the water can be dumped into the sea. Bardney is a 20 miles from the sea so won't start to flow fast for a while. The only level difference anywhere is less than a foot across the lock, once you get below that you can't see any flow. Unfortunately we can't get under the lock tail bridge. We need the level below the lock to fall to do that, but then we won't be able to get the bottom gates open against the water coming over the top gates, so we need the level above to fall a bit too. Have waded about and emptied and filled stuff at the services, and gone back to FIskerton for now.

There seems to be a theme occuring of you being in the area of sluices operating oddly. 

Not me. Honest. Been past the sluice on the way to Bardney. It's wide open and there's no level difference either side, with a very moderate flow.  All the water courses are equally full, and going up slowly in sync.

For future reference - just in case you are stuck for a while! - gas bottles float too, both empty and full.

I found that out attempting to carry one down the gunwhale on the Slough Arm in  January.  Moomins float too.

Or, it could be that those with the pump-out didn't read the forecast very well and are now using the canal, or, crossing their legs.

You're assuming that the boat with the pump out has space in the tank. This may not be a safe assumption.

The river levels appear to be flattening off. You might not have to cross your legs for too much longer before you can get under the bridge
