Ah, thanks, its clear now what happened. I was planning to escape west in mid August. Maybe?? At least I can go east. 

A lot of the tails on the Rochdale have cut outs for A frames but not that many have frames fitted.

Visiting Stanley Ferry workshops back in the 1980s, it was interesting to see L&LC lock gates alongside those for the C&HN. The framing for the latter was about 2 inches less in cross-section for locks which are the same width. The angle of the mitre will have some effect on the forces on a lock gate, which may account for the variation. Perhaps the C&HN dimensions have been copied for the Rochdale gates, resulting in weaker gates. A-frame supports can also be found on the L&LC, but only in areas which have suffered from subsidence. Those on the Rochdale are on the later western sections of canal to be built, and I did wonder if the standard of construction was poorer on the western end of the canal in an effort to keep down costs. A-frames are actually quite useful as they ensure that the mitre meets face to face every time, reducing wear on the seal. The other way of achieving this was by 'slaping posts' which the balance beam hit when the gate was shut. They were removed from the L&LC in the 1960s, possibly as a result of someone becoming trapped between the post and beam. The photo shows one at Gargrave.

Initial investigations have now been completed and a plan of repair has been organised. The gate will be lifted out and transported to our workshop to be repaired. This has been organised for the 17 June.

Whilst we repair the gate offsite, dams will be placed around the lock and the chamber will be dewatered. During this time, our teams will carry out repairs to the lock chamber and remove a build-up of debris.

We anticipate the repair and installation of the gate will take 2 to 3 weeks.

To ensure the safety of our customers, padlocks have been placed on Lock 81 and Lock 65 to prevent access on to the flight.

An update will be provided Monday 1 July."

 

So the historic boats will be stuck on the Rochdale for another 2-3 weeks.

At least you only had to do the run out of Manchester once, Me and Mac had to go back and do it all again, and it was just as hard long a day . It was very nice to meet you and I am glad you got over the hill in one piece, I hope you get back home soon

How many boats are still stuck on the Rochdale? We left by the Eastern route the Tuesday after the Rally and made it back to Brinklow in 9 days despite the many broken paddles on the Calder and Hebble.

Presumably, that means several boats which were planning to be at the Braunston Gathering at the end of June will not be able to attend. (Unless C&RT organize a mass Craning out) ?☹️

I assume you are still stuck on the Rochdale, (your blog has not been updated for a week) but you will presumably still be at Braunston with just Sickle.

Even if those boats could get through the shorter locks, the Calder is just another stoppage waiting to happen. Mind you there's lots of new 'tyre in the cut' logos and irrelevant signs appearing down that way to contribute to our health and well being.

Hebden brings back many memories. Worked canalside at the mill (can't remember the name of the mill) prior to renovating. Really lovely place, lived just down the road from there.

Going back nearly 30yrs now.

Update on 01/07/2019:

The damaged lock gate has been repaired and installed back in to the lock chamber. Our team have also cut, shaped and fitted a new quoin anchor stone and will continue to facilitate repairs to the lock gates to achieve a water tight fit, this week. Whilst continuing the repair works, the team are taking the opportunity to remove a build-up of debris and silt from within the lock chamber.

We anticipate navigation will resume 4pm, Friday 5 July.

Saw one of the Fellows and Wotsits going through Tod basin on Saturday, Belfast has been there for a few days. They can now escape, Mind the Wolves at Summit lads. Mind you they aren't as bad as the children of Newton Heath!
