The building of a new station and the extension of the Metro on what will be the first passenger carrying branch of that network, has led architects to produce images of the future for the station and the canalside. 

 

There is little place for heritage structures. Albion Mill & the Cheese & Butter Warehouse remains though and a reconstructed Mill Street goods station as does the hydraulic engine house and the Union Mill Annexe building. But gone in the plan are the original 1771 wharf for the coal trade and later warehouse belonging to Bickley Danks, the Best Wharf buildings have also disappeared. On the site of the Shakespeare Foundry, Crowleys Union Wharf and the Gas Works are a variety of houses.
