Lister air duct

Hi I have a lister SR3 (I think) on my boat. not sure how to identify it yet.

 

But the air intake on port side seems a bit overkill.

 

Is the large metal original box really necessary,

 

or could it be scaled down to a simpler round ducting type intake maybe 6"...

Air cooled engines need a LOT of airflow to keep them from overheating...

On my SR2, the ducting on the port side is the hot air eject. The air intake is just a hole in the hull on the other side. . I use 6 inch ducting for the eject, seems ok.
