A nostalgic look at how different things were, not so long ago!

I was looking through some old films yesterday and came across a great little film taken in the late 1950’s/early 60’s. For those who would like to see how transport was handled between UK and the continent in the days long before our membership of the EU, here is a great piece of nostalgia of a time when things seemed much more straightforward!

The film was part of the British Transport Commission library and is in 2 parts – the first is 16min and the second is 14 min. It has lots of shots of road transport, and cargo handling,  which I know interests one or two on this forum, ferries accessing Tilbury and in particular the River Ribble and  Preston Docks, with one short sequence showing a ferry using her bow rudder when proceeding stern first, and engineers manoeuvring a twin screw ferry before the days of bridge controlled engines.  The berth in Preston Dock used by the ferry is now the site of the marina.

I hope you enjoy it. I certainly did.
