Hull too thin on Dutch barge?

While a widebeam canal boat has been top of the list, I can't help feeling they're a bit featureless, inseide and out

Yes, compared to an old Dutch barge they are, but then that's true for most narrowboats too. I looked at quite a few Dutch barges but the hulls were always too thin for my liking. Had money been no object I'd have gone for a new build Dutch style barge but they were way out of my price range. Some of them have quite nice features and you get the benefit of thick epoxy coated steel.

Each to their own I suppose and if above the waterline aesthetics are important to you then fine, but since you say you won't be cruising then I'd have thought that any sort of Dutch barge with nice lines and hydrodynamic hull shape is going to be a bit wasted.
