Engine accelerates but propellor doesn’t turn

When we owned BADSEY the clutch rod worked by pulling it back to select forward and pushing it forward to go astern. I had not come across this before, and it took a bit of getting used to. My ultimate preference is a wheel for the gears and a wheel for the engine speed, and this is the set up in my current boat :captain:

Just a note on safety for the OP since they appear to be completely new to boats. Please keep hands and feet clear of the prop shaft when you get around to checking if it's turning. You're probably going to be standing above on the deck which is fine, but just in case you're standing in the engine hole messing about with the controls please be careful in case it suddenly starts spinning.

And I have had moments transitioning from the boat to the new car, on the boat lever forward was ahead, neutral in the middle and towards the back reverse but on our car as common with other automatics, lever forward equals backwards and lever back equals forwards. Bit embarrassing sometimes at traffic lights. Added to that motorists insist on passing starboard to starboard! at least in the UK and most of it's former colonies.  And cars have port running lights on both sides shining aft! Motorists also have a totally different understanding of sound signals.

A suggestion. Could @Nick Mark take three photos of the gearbox area? Doesn't matter if the engine is running or not.

One photo of the gearbox with the control lever in neutral.

One photo of the gearbox with the control lever pointing forwards.

One photo of the gearbox with the control lever pointing backwards.

This will let us tell if the control cable is connected, broken, or misadjusted. Also we will be able to circle where it is for future reference. Would speed up diagnosis no end.

And if the oil level is low, be aware that it is different oil types, depending on the gearbox. Again a photo, or any other information will help when selecting the correct type and where the dip stick/filler cap is.

Nah, more likely as many newbies do, he'll visit once a day. In the meantime the thread will be 4 pages long and will have morphed into a discussion about why it is imperative to service your ecofan before the weather warms up.

Not so sure. He came back initially after a couple of hours to find several answers, so he is aware this is a responsive forum.

Oh so, so common but no reason to for an inexperienced boater to feel embarrassed. There is likely to be another along within a month plus all those who read this topic, solved their "problem" so did not post.

More likely, discovered it was something daft like this, fixed it and got on with life, not giving the forum a second thought. Perfectly understandable even if not particularly good manners.
