Don’t know if this helps any or not

but when I replaced the oil I poured it down through the rocker covers

i now know that is not the correct procedure

Isn't it? That's the way I've always done it. On my engine can't see any other way of getting the stuff in.

Back down to the boat this morning then had to walk back up as I had forgot to take the dipstick

sump empty so put the drain plug back in put nine and a half pints back in maybe ten

not showing on the dipstick started the engine as I know it had the correct amount of oil in it

oil pressure gauge up to forty after half an hour at quarter throttle gauge showing just above twenty

still not showing on the dipstick

could the oil strainer be blocking the dipstick as I took it out to clean it

when I fitted a new crankcase gasket

i know it has the correct amount of oil just want see it show you on the dipstick

Quite sure it does but I will certainly have another look

If the dipstick doesn't push onto the tube, or the bottom of the tube isn't fitted correctly to the crankcase, you'll get the wrong reading

Go back a while.  Did that dipstick ever reach the oil when you definitely knew there was 9.1/2 pts or thereabouts oil in the engine. If it never did either the dipstick is too short or the tube is too long, providing that the tube is fully inserted properly at the crankcase and the dipstick does slip down over the tube when checking.  If your absolutely certain that both those things are correct then an alternative is to cut bits off the top of the tube in increments of about 1/4'' until the dipstick reaches the oil on the max mark. BUT DDOUBLE CHECK !!!! everthing mentioned first and that there's 9.1/2 or so pints of oil in it.

The dipstick tube looks fine, and it wouldn't matter if you did bend it, the dipstick always goes down the middle of the tube

Is there a number on the end of the dipstick knob?

Richard

Finally checked mine. It's got an 8 stamped on it, if that's any help.

Hunted high and low for a number 8 dipstick nowhere to be got

ended up ordering one from Realdiesels told them it was a sr2 marine engine

fifty two pounds for a piece of metal

it isn’t long enough to reach the bottom of the tube never mind go into the sump

is there a place round the crank case door side that takes a dipstick

if you look further up the thread there are some pics of where the dipstick is at the moment

and here are some pics of the new dipstick

You would need to make it yourself for your engine. We don't know whether or not you have a standard tube or its been messed about with in the past. Very simple, follow my instructions somewhere on this thread.

Post 13. The only addition to it is to flatten the end a bit, where the markings go. Beat with a hammer or file a flat.

There might be a blanking plug on the port side of that engine where the industral engines dipstick fits.
