Has any one used a product from a company called Soprema to overcoat bitimum

15  20 year lifespan

Prime first the finish coat

Primar Aslan 170

Test patch to be completed first to select the right primer

Looks like a way to overcoat bitimum

Why would you want to paint over bitumen ?

Yes that is normal but must be done every few years   this product has a 20 year lifespan

If you are just overpainting the existing 'blacking' surely the adhesion of the 'new paint' s only as good as the adhesion to the existing blacking, and the existing blacking to the steel hull.

Are you suggesting that there is no need to sand-blast the hull and get rid of the old paint and mill scale ?

No just found it and am thinking of using it

Wondered if any one else had used it as bitimum is not a great product

Sounds to me it should be on the same shelf as the snake-oil..

Good luck.

If it works as well as you hope, please do come back in a few years and let us know.

Standard blacking, redo every 2 years, maybe 3 if lucky. Epoxy, good for 7 to 10+ years but may need scrapes patching up  every 3 or 4 years.

Anything else...if it sounds too good to be true then it almost certainly is.

Used on fishing boats that would have more ware and tare

Well, if someone (you?) tries it and it proves effective on a narrowboat - there'll be a queue!  Do keep us abreast of your findings if you learn more Donal.

What product are we talking about?

Soprema make waterproofing products for buildings not paint systems for boats. The reason bitumen isn’t effective long term on boats is because it gets worn off by mechanical action and attacked by petro-chemicals floating on the water. Unless you know of a specific product for coating steel and adhering to bitumen you seem to be proposing substituting products formulated for the job at hand for ones that aren’t. In what environment is the product you are proposing meant to last for 20 years and with what application requirements?

There are various grades of Bitumen.  I used a tar-like product from the Coal Board.  I would suggest that 'Bitumen Paint' is an inferior product.  Not an expert, just gut feeling.
