A warning to people near Whittlesey near Peterborough, at Ashline Lock (a popular mooring): do NOT let your dog run free in the park there. Our daughter who lives near there, tells me that somebody has been leaving pieces of food laced with poison at random places around the field, and several of the local dogs have been killed there in the past few days.

Disgusting and savage behaviour. My sons suspects his neighbour has been chucking poisoned meat over the fence. police, RSPCA involved. No proof, no action. He spoke to his neighbour in a nice way and it hasn't happened for ages. But he has to check the garden before he lets out his GSD every time. To do this sort of thing is unacceptable.

Are you sure that this is actually true. Now don't have a go at me it is just that there is a lot of reports of this happening locally to me in Hartley Wintney, Hants. The local vets have not as yet seen one animal that has been poisoned and somebody new has moved into the area and where they have moved from is not getting dogs poisoned any more

These stories were going round Birkenhead a few months ago too.  Which isn't to say they may not be true, and even understandable.

What is also unacceptable is the way some people manage their dog ownership, and the sufferers can well get to the point of apparently losing any sense of proportion..  I had the misfortune to live in a terrace next door to someone whose dog barked loudly enough to shake the connecting wall from the moment he went to work at 7am until he got home about 6pm, and then again when he went to the pub.  Mentioning it did nothing.  I did consider throwing poisoned meat over the fence but in the end just recorded the dog barking, set up a 300 watt PA against his bedroom wall upstairs and ran it on full whack on a tape loop from 11 pm until the next morning (I went and stayed with friends). Nothing was ever said, but the dog disappeared.  My current neighbour's yappy terrier has a dogflap, goes into the garden (close to our bedroom window) about midnight most nights and barks at nothing for half an hour, then again at about 6am.  It's been mentioned.

Dog people, as far as I can tell, don't actually notice their own dog making a nuisance of itself.  It's not that they don't care, they just don't hear it, or don't think it matters.  But noise is one of the great curses of modern city living and can lead to what might look like over-reaction.  And dogs are designed for company, not to be left alone all day, or like the one further down my road, just kicked out into the back yard every day (where, of course, it barks incessantly) when the owners go to work.  It's my opinion that a high proportion of dogowners shouldn't be allowed to have the damn things, but sadly they are and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

We had / have one who hated the neighbour's cats, she poisoned the birds. My two cats died around that time. Police and SPPCA, there was evidence. No prosecution.

We got our rescue GSD, Zeus, because he had to be rehomed because of his incessant barking. This had resulted in a noise abatement notice being served on his previous owners by the local authority.

It took several months of keeping the patio window (which overlooks the canal and towpath) blinds drawn and having the front windows covered with frosted film to change his habit of barking furiously at everyrhing that moved. Now he only barks when certain dogs walk past of the ducks get too close to the patio window. ?

similarly here in Bristol.  to a great extent it is an urban myth.

It is mostly cats that are poisoned, All to offened from antifreeze leaking from vehicles, less than a teaspoon could be enough to cause potentially fatal poisoning in cats. Cats are particularly susceptible to poisoning from antifreeze due to their specialised metabolism. When ingested, a small amount of antifreeze can cause rapid and fatal injury to a cat’s kidneys Deso not help that antifreeze has a sweet smell and taste to cats.

Good post. Dog and cat owner here. With dogs its the owners. Cats..... no control. Noise can make anyone have dark thoughts.

Most antifreeze sold over the last few years has a bitter additive called Bitrex added to it to prevent this.

I always check the label for this before buying it now.

I'm not sure what the aim is for these idiots, I suspect they're probably anti dog poop crusaders, but their tactic would definitely claim the life of my well behaved, gentle, super-friendly, Labrador who is always cleaned up after... and it still won't make a blind bit of difference to the numbers of inconsiderate or uncaring dog owners.

And exactly the same applies to a proportion of moored up boaters running their engines.

When you stop to think about that it probably applies to almost every aspect of life. it's probably something deeply rooted in our make up - it's ok for me to do it but I don't like it when you do.

Summed up as “the rules were made for those other people over there”.

You mean you are happy to tread canine faeces into your boat? Not all dog owners are responsible people - fact.

Well, if you read my post, you'd remember I said that my dog is always cleaned up after. I also said "... and it still won't make a blind bit of difference to the numbers of inconsiderate or uncaring dog owners." referring to the indiscriminate poisoning of dogs, including those being properly controlled, cared for and cleaned up after.  It surprises me if you read that as support for offending dog owners, just as it would surprise me if I thought you were supporting the idiot crusaders who were poisoning dogs dogs at random.

It's a bit like leaving poisoned sandwiches on picnic tables in the hope that irresponsible dog owners will eat them.

Non dog owners and folk who clear up the sh!t who may have a bite are just collateral damage.
