Bmc 2.2 broken injectors?

Featured Posts

Hi there guys just a quick question for the group. I have a bmc 2.2 raw water cooled engine. Now I’ve noticed small amount of  Diesel on the water behind my boat. Over the course of a year this was a small amount that came out the exhaust with the water after just starting the engine and then stopped. I presumed it was as residue left in the engine been blown out with it been cold, stopping as It warmed up. I have been monitoring it over the last year and as of today the  Diesel didn’t stop and light trail had formed behind my boat after an hour of idle running. Am I right to suspect the fuel injectors and if so is it a clean out job or a replacement situation? Cheers.

You take them out and get them overhauled at your local injection specialist. You will not have the equipment to test and set them up properly. Also all but impossible to clean them as DIY.

It might be a lube oil film rather then diesel but the injectors are arguably the easiest to sort.

I'm not daft enough to argue with @Tony Brooks about engine maintenance, but when my raw water cooled boat started doing this it was a clogged air filter, leaving too much unburnt diesel in the exhaust.

On a dry exhaust you would see this as black smoke, on a water injected exhaust you see it as a thin rainbow trail behind your boat.  It's worth a check before you pull your injectors!

Too many guesses have to be made to augment the OP's question so you are correct, it could be something like that or a sealed engine space so I tried to answer his direct question and warn him there may be other causes.

I think some of our ex taxi used 2.2s came with oil bath air filters so overfilling one of those could cause it but not after a years use unless he keeps refilling it. Some 2.2s used pneumatic governors on an in-line injection pump. Those have throttle butterflies so we could be talking valve stem oil seals, especially as the engine is so old. Too much we do not know but "jetting" injectors at idle are probably a better then 50-50 guess.

Old BMC engines, in fact any elderly engine is probably a bit smoky so some of that smoke could be a bit of oil and a bit of diesel, does it run at a reasonable temperature when warm?

Thanks for the responses guys, I really carnt fault the engine for its age she cold starts first time and runs really well I don’t have a temp gauge fitted but using a  laser thermometer  Externaly after a hour of idle running the engine block was reading 68 degrees so i presume it’s operating around 80ish degrees? Also I removed the air filter and cleaned it all not that long ago so I think it’s safe to rule that out.
