Is there any specific grease to be used when greaseing the crank shaft on the lister sr2 

i can get grease catridges from my work but would like to know if there is a certain one to use

Unless you have the engine in bits or its a stationary engine you can't see the crankshaft eccept through the crankcase door.  Do you mean the camshaft, the stub that sticks out where the alternator gets its drive from.

Apologies bizzard it is the camshaft the raised handstart chain goes around it also

I'd oil the freewheel chain sprocket, same as on a bike. You can get chain grease for the chain, or oil it. A drop of oil on the handle shaft upstand bearings.  You could rub some oil over the shaft if you you want, some folk paint it.

I shall do that also if you enlarge the picture you will notice a grease nipple between the chain and the thinner end of the camshaft 

as always your good advice is most welcome

Don't they have a grease nipple on the sprocket. I threw my in the skip when I put 12" pulley on.

Yes, grease nipple, ordinary LM grease, same as car wheel bearings and such. Only don't over do it, it might splatter onto the drive belt.

That was one or two years ago when cars had grease nipples on wheel bearings

A lot more than one or two, more like 40 or 50 years at least.

It was a bugger getting the greaser on when the wheels were going round.

Fascinating topic, what does that nipple lubricate? Is it just the freewheel on the sprocket?
