Generator disturbance

Looking for advice...

I’m a canal side resident & there is a boat moored opposite my home that runs a generator quite late into the evenings, it was on at 10:45pm the other evening. The boat has been moored there for nearly 3months & suddenly the generator has been used daily. They are sadly not just passing through.  Being turned on around 7/8pm up until 10/11 some evenings. Is this normal?

Absolutely no issues what so ever with the need for a generator, it’s just the constant use every day late into the evening that is becoming quite disturbing. Not sure what is best to do as it is heard over the television it’s so loud & disturbs our sleep also some evenings.

I sympathise. Generators and running engines can be a real nuisance. I suppose the first thing would be to have a conversation with the owner, maybe he / she could move a few yards. If that fails then maybe a small wall of straw bales between the generator and the house could help. Then maybe the council could have a word with the owner. Its selfish and inconsiderate and there is never an excuse to run the things late in the evening.  The last time I had words with someone over this I had an exhausted wife and a brand new baby on board and they took precedence over the nearby noisy boaters wish to watch the telly, Either he turned it off or it was going in the canal.

Speak to the offender, who is breaking the rules and being totally inconsiderate; if this fails, or you don't feel comfortable speaking to them, report to CRT. If this fails, then involve the council.

Agreed. I would suspect that the environmental health department would intervene. They did for me when a nighttime noise (not boat related) was affecting our sleep.

Is the boat just  casually moored to the towpath or is it an official mooring site ?

Its against the rules but,.....

There are more and more people moving onto the canals as a cheap place to live with no interest in the canals or way of life, and quite a few feel that for these reasons the rules do not apply to them, others just don't care.

CRT are unlikely to help with the noise but might get involved with the overstaying. You can try the council but in these days of cutbacks spending effort on a boat is not high priority.

You could talk to them yourself but there is always a chance of trouble.

Sad but true. If you live on a boat you really have to adapt to the limitations, be careful with the water, think about the gas, the loo, and electricity is brilliant stuff but you can't have it round the clock unless you plug into a handy lamp post.

I think that if you people actually read that link I posted you will find that the offenders licence can be revoked for persistance and also the Enviromental Health could also bring a prosecution. Also what on earth has where it is moored got to do with anything. An inconsiderate idiot is an inconsiderate idiot wherever they are.

Absolutely, and the link from CRT you posted also asks for them to be informed of offenders so they can deal with it. To do nothing is to let these inconsiderate minorities do what they want. So either challenge or report them but don't just feel it has to be accepted. I have knocked on boats at 10pm for engine running but appreciate not everyone will be comfortable doing this, so at least report them.

Report to Cart. Those idiots running a genny that late are inconsiderate. I reported same to Cart about a fool running a genny at 10pm leaking fuel on towpath and Cart responded next day and sent down a local liason guy to deal.

Just now, Paul C said:

debatable!!!

And - even if it was revoked they could immediately apply for another licence, and subject tot he boater meeting the '3-requirements' they could not refuse to issue a new licence.

See page 6, paragraphs 6

The British Waterways Act 1995 limits to three specific criteria our ability to refuse to licence a boat.”

And paragraph 7 which argues that C&RT can revoke a licence if conditions in their T&Cs are not met.

Its not illegal. I am not sure what you can do - I assume you realised canals have canal boats on them, not just ducks etc?

Your comment is a bit harsh. The OP doesnt appear to have an issue with boats, rather with what seems to be noise cause by an inconsiderate boater. If I was moored nearby, so would I as a boater, so I agree with her concern.

True, the boater is a pillock. I love being PC. It is simply unecessary to run some poxy gennie after 8. If they need to run it after 8 then they either need new batteries that will hold charge or they need a different lifestyle to enable them to stop being a pillock. When you move onto a boat yous should adopt the huge change in lifestyle or bugger off back to some dwelling. I suggest the polite op may try conversation with them but that is sometimes a problem for some people.

I am not sure what tea & sympathy is going to pragmatically do though. The fact is (unlike the unenforceable T&Cs) there's no restriction, at least until 11pm. Its widely accepted as antisocial - AND evening times sound travels better anyway - but if someone needs their genny running, they'll do it and unless you can reason with them, difficult to see a solution.

I would think the key fact is that the boat has been moored in the same place for three months. First thing, check that it's a legitimate mooring. Then check the boat's number, which should be displayed on the side. Then check CRT's licence checker to see if it's got one. If any of those things are invalid, report it to CRT, every day if necessary! Report it as a nuisance anyway, but the odds are it's illegally moored anyway.

That being said, there's a terminally irritating pillock on the Macc on a farm mooring who runs either his engine or a very noisy genny till 11pm at least every night, has done for years, and just swears at anyone who complains.

The fact they appear to have been CMing for three months however, is reason for CRT to take enforcement action.
