mark99
Anyone tried applying vinyl tar (spare tin of coflex) over paint on sides of gunwhales? Does it stick? Looks like the existing paint is raddled red.
mark99
Surely someone has tried this....... ie putting blacking over painted gunnel sides? Vinyl tar blacking not bituminous that is.
Rose Narrowboats
What's the solvent in Coflex? If it's the same as Comastic (Xylene) and I think it is, then the whole lot (paint included) will end up looking like you threw paintstripper at it. Dr Bob
It will depend on what the red coating is. Only safe way if you don't know what the original is, is to try a small area and see if the new coating lifts the old one.
Ex Brummie
Or alternatively, if you have a complete tin, sell it for £75 + and buy the right paint for the job. Coflex is much sought after since 1st Feb. Ebay could be your friend.
mark99
Used a bit the weekend over old vinyl tar. What a shame it's not now available. I snaffled virtually the last tin when I heard it was being discontinued in the chandlers. Will try a test patch as suggested. The gloss finish paint is between rubbing strake and gunnel on someone elses boat not mine. We may end up just removing the gloss here and replacing with blacking. Painting this area is folly imo as it will get scratched immediately. At least with blacking you can slap a bit over a scratch with great ease. A bit of scratched blacking looks fine but scratched gloss not so. Edited March 19, 2019 by mark99
