I think the "old timers", as you call them, would refer to tons - "tonnes" being a foreign measure. Very few people would refer to something as heavy as that in pounds. I believe that our fairly heavily-built 45-footer weighs about 15 tons. So a boat five feet longer but of more standard construction would perhaps weigh about the same.
