Eberspacher starts then stops

Hello,

We have an eberspacher 5dw to heat three radiators and our water. Its been working fine for about 18 months (re run it twice a day) and now randomly its stopped working. It trys to fire up twice and then goes into shutdown mode. (lasts for about 5 minutes). Any ideas what this might be / how to fix without having to pay for a specialist to come out?

Also we have a timer controller and wasn't sure if this can be used to reset it / fault find?

We had the ecu replaced 18 months ago and before that was done had the same problem. its been very unreliable to be honest.

Thanks,

Malcolm

2 Main possibilities.

1   Its carbonned up due to being idled instead of used at full burn, they don't like red diesel fuel.  Burning it on Kerosine for a while may solve it.

2   The supply voltage is dropping due to battery or connection problems.

Outside chance it is overheating due to air in the water circuit/s?

A third possibility is air in the water system which can cause this symptom as the unit detects it as an overheat and terminates the startup sequence. There is a large screw on the top of the heater. Undo that slightly until water dribbles out. If bubbles also come out, wait until they stop before re-tightening.

If it's anything like the Mikuni then it could be a coked up flame detector.  I quick wipe over sorts out the Mikuni.  I need to do that now.

I am sure that you are wrong with what you have said above and that they run better on the new fuel that is available today. if you google it there is a report somewhere or don't bother and just keep talking rubbish

I agree

Diesel heaters do seem to like a good thrashing .

When I bought my boat the heater had the fault described but it turned out the batteries were shot.

Certainly batteries worth investigating before replacing expensive heater parts.

To quickly eliminate this potential issue,  does the Eber start and run normally with the engine running or when on shore supply when the system us at charging voltage?

  • 2 weeks later...

so tried letting some water out of top screw with no luck. have also tried running engine. Loads of smoke comes out now when trying to start.

Am thinking it may be better to get a new one as found a direct replacement for £700 with 3 year warranty:https://www.bowerspartsonline.co.uk/brands/eberspacher/complete-heaters-kits/eberspacher-d4wsc-hydronic-4-12v-water-heater-12v-252257050000

Are these easy to replace like for like? Is it a simple disconnect and connect job? Thanks,

In a word YES if its the same model they are a doddle to remove/replace. It takes me about twenty minutes to remove my webasto ( same difference ) and replace. Provided you can get at the poxy thing of course!! Depending on how good a job was done when fitted depends on wether you have hassle with water loss and subsequent bleeding of the system buts its not rocket science. My system is fitted with shut off valves so only lose a cup full or less when changing mine.

We had a 15+ year old D5WSC, it was always developing faults with many of the problems already mentioned in this topic, typically 2-3 times in a year and usually at the most inconvenient times. It heated a 60 litre calorifier, 1 radiator, 2 fin rads and 1 towel rail. I recently had it replaced with a smaller D4WSC unit. It has to work a little harder than the old D5 due to being a slightly smaller which in theory helps to prevent it getting coked up. Conveniently it also burns less fuel on our 55ft narrowboat.

Below I have attached a photo showing Eberspacher's recommendations based on Narrowboat size. (Source)
