It's the rare chance to tread where few have gone before.

A section of the canal near Dukes 92 in Castlefield has been drained for urgent lock gate repair work - and an open invitation has been issued for people to climb down to the bottom and take a look.

 
 

Among hundreds of old bricks and bottles dredged up from the canal bed, the drainage also unearthed, bizarrely, a huge plastic tea-pot, a large number of old mobile phones, a Gameboy console and a penny coin dating back to 1919.

I remember when the Rochdale Nine being empty was pretty much the norm... you had to pay a ludicrous sum (£25?) for the privilege of doing battle with recalcitrant lock gear and pounds that were either empty or too full... £25 (I think) at mid 1980's prices for one mile and nine locks

I thought it was £35 when we did it
