  1. Hi folk, I’ve bought a boat with Louvre windows, any suggestions where I can get replacement seal strips that go between the glass panes? Photo of Louvre attached!.. Thanks for any help! Ali
  2. Why don't narrow boat new builds have double glazing, is it just cost?
  3. The windows on my boat used to be louvred until a previous owner decided to replace all (except the bathroom) with non opening plain panels. My question is - would it be possible to put louvres back in, and where would I get them from? Would it be cheaper to just replace some of the windows with "pre-loved" windows - there's no way I could afford to pay the prices that new windows cost!
  4. I've stripped my windows to get them re-anodized and need to buy new rubbers, they are 960mm wide , all rounded corners , one half fixed, one half sliding. I've nine in total so hoping to buy the rubbers on the roll. They are from a late 80's boat, so the rubbers were, well not rubber anymore, and it looks like 3 different forms, a u section for the fixed side, possibly a flat for the sliding, and a square section in front of fixed side in the sliding channel. I've looked on-line but no joy. Any advice would be very welcome
  5. Several of my windows are now leaking. I have tried running a bead of clear silicone sealant around the window as a temporary fix but this hasn't worked too well and is a bit unsightly. When I get a chance, I plan to remove the windows (one at a time), sort out the rust that I am sure will be behind them, seal them and re-fit. My question is, what is the best product to use to seal the windows with? I have heard that there is a tape based product that is reported to be quite good. Has anybody got any experiance of re-sealing caravan type windows and what works best? Many thanks
  6. Hi all i thinking of fitting secondary glazing using clear acrylic sheet and magnetic tape. Has anyone done this and if so how effective has it been. My boat has 18 windows and umpteen vent on the roof. i am looking at way of keeping the boat warmer. I have a morso squirrel with a eco fan but this only tends to heat one end of the boat. we also have a back boiler but this only heats the radiators if the fire is absolutely blazing. we are just getting the hang of keeping the fire going all night but it is still really cold in the mornings and I feel having so many cold pain of glass and draft has a lot to do with this problem.
  7. Hi All, We have been thinking about fitting some of that cheap film that you can attach to window frames and then make taut with the use of a (12v) hair drier. Do any of you have experience with this? I've seen it used in a house, but the main issue I envisage on a boat is how to stick it securely to the wooden window frames. We want to use this on most - but not all - windows to reduce condensation and increase heat insulation. Any thoughts??? Cheers!
  8. We have a wooden cratch with canvas covers with integral soft plastic windows with zipped over covers. This covers our prow deck where the floor level is the same as the rest of our boat with bench seating running round the prow and a table giving us a useful dining area. Problem is that despite good quality canvas covers and copious PTFE spraying when it rains heavily water does get in, its damp and the upholstery is getting watermarked. It's a great little facility in the summer but although we have a couple of fin radiators in there it can still be a bit chilly in winter. We are considering replacing the canvas with some form of rigid structure with double glazed windows so the area is warmer, less damp and we can use it more.....a bit like a conservatory ! Anyone out there have anything like this or seen on other nb's pls ?
  9. Hello all, The misses and i have recently bought a stripped out 50ft springer project boat. We are in the process of stripping out the windows, replacing broken glass and re-sealing. As its of a fair age the previous owners have gunned a ridiculous amount of sealant etc to keep what glass is left in place. Some of the windows have plastic instead of glass. We have found that we are missing 2 sealing u channels at the bottom of the top hopper piece of glass on the larger windows (see images attached). I habe tried for months now to get an alumimium u channel to fit 4mm glass but have had no luck. Would anyone know if i could get these channels anywhere or know anywhere that would have something similar or even know anywhere that could fabricate them? Thanks in advance
  10. ooking into new windows,(double glazed with thermal break) any recommendations for companies to supply, or supply and fit. got 12 of them - I am already in contact with narrowboat windows - formaly worcester who made current ones, Channal Glaze and Wesley windows - and would welcome feed back on these too
  11. I am having my boat repainted next year and want to spruce up the tired anodised gold window frames which are scratched and tatty. I have read a post on this forum from 2007 and noted that there might be some new primers available 9 years on. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions please. My boat painter has never been asked to do this and is wary !
  12. advice please, time has come to take out and reseal twp windows. want to know the easiest way to do this. Have been told that I need to extract windows, clean. then rub down frame, vactan, primer coats (2?) then pre coat then top coat (3?). When finished that replace windows etc. This will mean putting the boat under cover which may be problematic. Do I really need to get all those coats onto the body before I can put the windows back in as this will mean at least a weeks work with some days being only an hour or so. Welcome any views or past experience.
  13. The recent heavy rain has reminded me that a couple of our window frames have started to leak between frame and cabin side. I removed them all 19 years ago, and in my ignorance used silicone and stainless steel self tapping screws. Now 19 years aint bad, but I hope to improve on that this time and go for 30 years. I have decided (through reading the forum) that I will use butyl rubber window tape,if I can get the windows out ok. The question , though, should I continue with the self tapers,or would there be any benefit from tapping all the holes and use stainless steel machine screws instead? Thanking you.
  14. Seitz windows are manufactured for the motor home market has anybody any experience of them in a narrowboating context? Do they work? If so any problems?
  15. I've been in touch with Caldwells, regarding a problem I have with my windows, but as yet they have been unable to shed any light. What has been happening (since they were new and fitted to my new boat last year) is that the bottom channels in the extrusions fill up with water from condensation. It then overflows and runs down into the hull of the boat via a tiny gap in the woodwork - I can fix this gap with beading but that is not the problem. The windows have three holes (left and right) in the channels, with corresponding little covers on the outside to shield from rain, the idea being that any accumulated condensate just runs out of the holes. I'm sure many of you have these windows and know what I mean. But my holes don't work - they are all totally blocked by the rubber seal that sits inside the extrusion. Caldwells are at a loss - does anyone else have this problem? I suspect the windows are not correctly fitted - possibly the cut outs in the panels of the boat are a tad small and the rubber is pushed down too far when fitted? Or suggestions, thoughts please
  16. We're our boat's 2nd owner. She was a Liverpool sail-away (fitted by Liverpool), and we're trying to identify who's the maker of the windows. The only reason we want to find the maker is to ask their advice on the best way to sort out our problem. When the paintwork around the windows are fixed, we're looking for a really good seal, possibly neoprene? Wonder if anyone here can help? Any ideas? BTW, I tried the search facility here, but it kept reverting to a Google search despite clicking the 'ALL' button.
  17. The windows in my narrowboat are in need of replacement, if only because a previous owner removed all the opening sections! Whilst this means the boat is secure(?) it has the downside of meaning very little ventilation which on the few hot days we get becomes quite "interesting". Sadly (especially now I am retired) the budget is limited and the cost of new windows look prohibitive, so I am looking for suggestions for acquisition of good second hand windows. I can't help wondering what happens to the windows removed when boats are being refurbished ...........
  18. Hello all, There are a few posts about redoing aluminium windows but just wanted to double check with the more experience that my plan made some sense and for some advise regarding particular products. I have aluminium windows as per photos and what with the recent rainy weather I found at least two of them leaking pretty badly ! they are 10years old or so. (I have owned the boat about a year and a half) THE PLAN: - Remove all wood framework inside - Unscrew windows from outside (drill out any that have rounded) - Prize away windows trying to keep from bending, using a pallet knife to break seal - Rub down with sandpaper and Fertan any rusty metal behind (wasn't sure if I would need to paint after Fertan?) - Clean windows up, remove any old silicone - Use a new rubber window seal (need some help here...) *Not sure which particular product to use ! Midlands seems to stock a few types? Could someone confirm which product to use? These were the three products I couldn't seem to figure out which one to go for.... Product Code: CW-052, Product Code: C120, Product Code: CW-015 *What do I stick this to? window or boat? (I am assuming its one sided sticky) *Not sure what to do at corners, presumably I cut this into 2 long and 2 short lengths the same as window, then do I mitre the corners as best I can? - Ok, then re-screw window back in, not sure what the screws go into presumably self tapping into the boat steel ?? - Then finally ,apply small bead of silicon around window frame *Anyone recommend a sealant for this, heard mixed things about sikaflex and I understand its important to get a marine one. So... Have I missed anything?? Any tips at all really appreciated as I am a little nervous about taking my windows out, I am going to start with one ! Many thanks in advance, Look forward to reading your opinions. Martin Photos below: Above is window from outside. Above is screws attaching windows Above is more screws from outside that look like they might be a pain to get out :/ Above is wooden framework inside boat that I was planning to remove first !
  19. Microsoft has recently added extensions to its new browser Edge, Edge is fast and claims to use less battery energy. I'm trying it now as an alternative to Chrome. I've also added Gmail to the 'Mail' app just to get the notifications. edited to remove link to Apps which are different to extensions.
