  1. I got this through in email this morning, https://heritagecalling.com/2023/09/28/the-thames-from-above/ a nice article using Areofilms images.
  2. Hi all, we have just bought our first 16ft river cruiser and looking for somewhere to moor it/ store it in oxfordshire, we are in woodstock. Please can someone help us or point us in the right direction!! THANKS
  3. Hi I’m considering buying a 40 foot narrowboat that needs some work . The survey has found a lot of pitting on the hull base, and recommended over plating possibly the entire length . Amidships to aft are the worst areas apparently She is currently on the Slough arm and I would be bringing her to Oxford. I’m looking for a yard on route or In Oxford area that could quote me for the plating and blacking ? any other advice on this also welcome. J
  4. Morning All, Apologies if this has been discussed before but I couldn’t find it on the search: I have a 60x11 Piper Widebeam with a 60hp Beta in a Marina on the Thames near Bray. I am new to boating having only had 1.5-2 weeks cruising since I purchased the boat this year. Q. Is there a way of working out the speed of the river? I can’t find any useful websites with the info. I am really only interested in non-tidal Thames, particularly between Henley abs Shepperton. We are on yellow boards (increasing) and have been all week. The river levels themselves are not a problem, I just want to make sure if I go out I can get back up stream. I have tried measuring the speed of floatsam by walking at pace with it using a gps. It’s around 2.5-2.8 mph (at least on the surface). I have been told she will make 3.8-4.5 mph. In theory it seems fine as I only want to go 1 mile downstream to empty the holding tank before winter and fuel up. Any advice would be appreciated. I am aware that going out on red boards may invalidate insurance. Thank you!
  5. Apparently the moorings at Beale Park (between Pangbourne and Goring on the Thames) have all been closed and replaced with no mooring signs the whole length. According to Facebook this was partly done at the request of the local fishing club but also because of boaters recently overstaying, leaving rubbish, having fires and being abusive to the park ranger. Very sad if it's true/and or permanent. One of the best moorings on the Thames, somewhere space was usually guaranteed and never seen a problem there before. I wonder if there is anything local marinas/boat clubs or even hire bases can do to get this reversed? Hire companies on the Thames are going to struggle if moorings keep being lost. Met a lovely family on a hire boat who had given up getting to Lechlade yesterday as the river was too challenging (including, they said, finding moorings.)
  6. We have the opportunity of spending 3 or 4 days on the eastern section of the Kennet and Avon next week, and would welcome any advice from forum members as to places to visit, pubs not to miss, good places to moor etc - along with any necessary navigational tips. I know every twist and turn of the western sections of the Kennet and Avon - having been brought up in the village of Winsley, just above Avoncliffe and Limpley Stoke. This year we have the opportunity of exploring the eastern end. We're planning a handover of our 'share boat' on the Thames near Reading at the week-end and plan to be back at Oxford for Easter week-end, before returning north up the southern Oxford. We'd be grateful of any suggestions or recommendations. Love peaceful and tranquil places, but with the Western Region main railway line alongside - guess I'll have to brush up my loco spotting knowledge.
  7. Hi, I'm looking into moving onto a widebeam in the Surrey (Surbiton) area. I've heard residential moorings are hard to come by, so I'm wondering if it's possible to find a local farmer or land owner, with land backing onto the Thames and renting a mooring off them? What license would I need? Would the land owner need planning permission? What else would I and the land owner need to stay legal? Thanks Andy
  8. Hi all, My partner is looking to purchase a boat from Holland and bring it to the UK.. He is very new to boating (and i unfortunately haven't a clue). We were wondering what the legalities are around bringing a boat to England and rough pricing. A boat like this one for example, https://www.inautia.com/used-boat-58270420191953515010299539748451.html or https://www.boatshop24.com/en/campi-400-houseboat/Motorboat/1335920 . Roughly 12-13m length and 4m beam. Please let me know if any one can help me out ? Thanks in advance :) Madi
  9. My wife and I are buying a broad beam boat (60 ft by 9ft-12ft) as a live aboard and are researching possible moorings In the south of the country. We are expecting to pay a healthy amount so any suggestions of locations or marinas with spaces, or any general advise would be gratefully received. Thanks Craig
  10. Husband saw a cruiser drifting into trees earlier this morning and it didn't look like there was anyone on board . Might be an idea if you have a cruiser near Wallingford to check it's still there . Had a lot of rain here last night ( surrey ) . Bunny.
  11. Hiya, I'm new to the forum and I'm struggling to find a new pace to put my boat on the Thames. Now Lion has gone it would seem that Eel Pie is just packed out. I'm having trouble finding anywhere to move my boat to. I need to work on it and I want it to be safe. I wondered if there is a good place on the Thames where I could moor on a temporary basis but also be in a bit of a community of fellow boaters so we could watch out for each other a bit. Does anyone know of such places or somewhere I could moor the boat cheapy while I fix it up? Freya
  12. We're near Rickmansworth at the moment, on our way to Brentford. We're looking to pick up a PLA Thames certificate for a month, cruising towards Oxford, eventually getting onto the Oxford Canal. The Thames is new to us, though we have done the Calder & Hebble, and the Aire & Calder last summer - we're hoping there's not much difference, except maybe bigger locks and challenges. Am I right in saying the part of the Thames we'll be cruising is not tidal, therefore we don't need to dig out our anchor? What's the chances of the Thames being in flood during April / May? Does anyone have advice how mooring access and facilities work? Do we need different keys, or other implements? (We got caught out with the 'spike' needed on the Aire and Calder). What about red/green navigation lights, are they obligatory? Any advice would really be appreciated.
  13. planning to take my 56 ft narrowboat along the Regents Canal, join the Thames and then sail west thru London and then to Reading.. Are there any things I should be doing now such as pre booking mooring spots etc. Are there any streteches where I am going to struggle with mooring and all advice welcomed, new area for me.
  14. In between fitting out the boat, I am actually, slowly making my way around the network I'm currently on the Lea, having thoroughly enjoyed a summer on both the Lea and the Stort. However, I'm keen to try pastures new now and the K&A is looking favourite. While I'm heading that way it seems sensible to explore the Basingstoke and also the river down to Godalming. However, I'm very unsure of procedures on the Thames (should I try coming out at Limehouse or play safe and go back through London to emerge at Brentford?) How long the various stretches of the Thames take, where to moor and the licenses available. I'm thinking it would be silly to buy a gold license with only two months left? I'm a cc'er with a 62ft nb. I've been looking at maps and reading up but just confused at the moment. If anyone has advice or can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. thanks
  15. Hi, I am travelling off the K@A where I have just enjoyed a fantastic trip to Bristol and back over the last couple of months. So next venture is to spend a month license travelling on the Thames to wey navigation . Could people advise on good spots to stop for 60' boat nb and any navigational issues I should be aware of, I have travelled from Oxford to Reading, but still my first proper trip on a river. I have decided to get a month license, I presume I will get that at Sonning lock? Is a month too long on that stretch? I could go up to Teddington and return back to wey navigation, but after wey will be going to Brentford. Any advice very welcome, thanks in advance. As an aside, I want to go to Windsor racecourse, can you moor near the entrance.? Thanks again.
  16. Moored at what looked like a standard EA 24h mooring site below/around the corner from Chertsey bridge/Dumsey Meadow today. Nearly didn't read the sign as it looked the same as others, fortunately we did as it is instead asking for £100 per night. Needless to say we quickly moved on but I'm curious as to the logic here? Why not just say no mooring? Is it some sort of council requirement to provide a public mooring but they can't really be bothered with it? If it had been dark or raining I can imagine people getting caught out.
  17. I am considering - and I want to stress only considering at this point - doing the Thames to river Medway (Most likely would be entering Thames at Limehouse). Would be interested to know if anyone is planning on doing this journey in the foreseeable, or if anyone who's done it before would fancy coming along. Like I said, it's by no means definite, I'm just putting out a feeler or two at this stage and I still have to research it properly.
  18. Hi all, We will soon to be embarking on our first journey on our new boat. We're both new to boat ownership but do have limited experience between ourselves. This will certainly be the biggest trip we've done and we can't bleedin wait to get out there and explore. Before we do though, I thought I'd come seek advice here. The trip will begin at Bradford on Avon and end at Brentford, before moving on to the GU. Any tips and pointer for the challenges along the way, getting the boat ready, equipment needed, where to and not to moor, things that always take longer than they should and of course good pubs. We've got ourselves a Nicholsons guys but any other insider tips will be greatly appreciated. Main concerns are the sections on rivers as we haven't had any previous river cruising experience. Thanks!
  19. Took this pic at Staines a couple of days ago, I believe Betty was on the Scottish canals this week and has asked Phil to take her on a jolly on their boat, so must be heading her way. How much .? If she is selling it
