  1. Mine is water cooled with a skin tank 👍 , so I'm only asking here in an "If I had a boat like that, what would I do?" way. The recent storm raised the water levels here, and a boat has sunk. 😢 I'm not going to say much about that because I suspect there will be disagreements about how it happened. All I know is the water level rose three feet during the night and that boat didn't follow. It looked like a project-in-progress boat and I've never seen its owner. We can't see it just now, but we suspect it had an air cooled engine with the usual big slot in the side just inches above the water line... so now I'm looking at other air-cooled boats and 😨 wondering "Should I say something? Do they know the risks?". The first air-cooled engine I met had its cooling air intake in the roof, a bit like a giant mushroom vent. I believe it was a DIY conversion from unpowered. The effect is very noisy, and it's a liability when cleaning the roof with a bucket of water. But it does seem like a more sensible place. So what are people's thoughts on moving an air intake from below the gunnels? Other threads mentioning this include, One on mods to hull fittings to raise the freeboard (do I mean freeboard in this context?),
  2. I admit myself confused. I get that an open weed hatch, faulty stern packing, or non functioning bilge pump will flood the engine bay - but why oh why does that sink the boat? The ballast at the bow counteracts the weight of several people standing on the stern so should be enough to counteract the weight of water in the engine bay. Am I missing something? Is the water getting from the engine bay into the main hull somehow and over weighing the whole boat? I thought the engine bay, below deck level, was a separate compartment from the main hull and ballast area. Surely there is more we can do to reduce risk of sinking?! Please can you guys clarify.
  3. Looks like someone has cilled an Alvechurch boat at Botterham. https://www.expressandstar.com/news/transport/2020/08/22/three-elderly-people-rescued-from-sinking-narrowboat-in-canal-lock/ Also on the Daily Wail site. RCR will no doubt be on the case but I guess that at least two holidays have just gone down the tubes. N
  4. How to sink your boat. 1. Wait until your shower pump gets blocked one night while LongSufferingwife is showering. 2. Tell her...dont worry....you'll nick the pump out the engine room temporarily. 3. Forget to replace the one in the engine room. 4. Wait a few weeks and paint the engine room with nice grey floorpaint. 5. Check your weed hatch to see if there's plastic packets etc round the prop. 6. Replace the weed hatch, nice and tight. 7, Go for a cruise. 8. Start to sink. 9. Press bilge pump button. No pump. SINK. In my case...it turned out differently. 7. Go for a short cruise to fill with water. 8. Move a short distance and moor up for the night. 9. Open the engine bay to inspect lovely new paint. 10. See water on top of the paint. 11. Oooh heck. 12. Get mop and bucket. 13. Mop out all the water. 14. Inspect water trail...see wet weed hatch cover. 15. Inspect weed hatch tightening bolt thread. Find a worn section. 16. Job for tomorrow. New seal on weed hatch, and new design for tightening it. Not one central bolt, but possibly 2. One on each side. 17. Order new bilge pump for engine bay. 18. Repaint engine bay for the 2nd time. Close call.
  5. Hi fellow boaters, New to living aboard and my first scare last night. I was moored in Berkhamsted and in the middle of the night I awoke to find my boat was sitting heavily angled in the water. I worked out that I must have been sitting on silt whilst the water levels dropped. It transpired the lock downstream had a panel left open, hence why the water levels dropped in the pound I was moored in. I was wondering, is there any tips for mooring in silted up areas? Do people probe the water before deciding to moor in certain areas or is there a way to moor so you're sitting further away from the canal edge?? Cheers! George x P.S I later passed a boat which had been flooded due to the drop in water as well! ?
  6. Where do old boats go when they die? - don't say 'to the bottom of the canal' - but that is likely if neglected. They leak and sink. Then CRT are stuck with the problem of moving it and charging the owner, if known. What does CRT do with a wreck - sell it? - then what does the new owner do with it . How long can a boat be kept going - and at what stage does it become uneconomical to maintain it? - then back to the first question - where do boats go when they die? Underlying this question is concern for the remaining life of my boat - it is 40 years old and rusty and completely watertight (bone dry in the bilge, not a drop of water anywhere) - but I assume it needs serious work on the hull due to rusting - at least blacking - and maybe plating - but to what extent ? I am planning to take it to a boatyard for a hull survey - but that will only tell me it needs work - but to what extent ? I would like some help in assessing effectiveness of different types of remedial work and how they reflect in estimated life of a boat and the sales value - with a view to selling it.
