  1. Hi peeps. Some advice needed please. I'm in the midst of the first full service our Isuzu 42. I'm endeavouring to do it all, and to do it properly, as the previous owners seem to have done nothing. Ever! I need to drain the coolant from the system, as it certainly hasn't been done for three or more years. The tank on the swim has two hoses, but both are at the top, at either end. (I'd have thought that one would be at the bottom, from what I've read here.) There is no obvious drainage point, but quite a few bleed valves. There is also a calorifier circuit. We are trying to not spend lots of cash, so I can see three options: The brass hand pump that's set up for pumping oil from the sump. Modify an old bilge pump that I have recently replaced. Use the engine's coolant pump to push everything out. The bilge is clearly the better solution, in terms of time and energy. I figure I can dismantle it, and then attach an intake hose, which can be placed into the keel tank/radiator, once the top half of the system has been drained (either by gravity or by the pump.) If I were to use the engine pump, I imagine I'd disconnect the hose that sends coolant into the engine. The problem I can foresee is that the pump might need to be primed, or might be damaged by pumping air? I don't think that the engine could be damaged by such a short run... but am uncertain. The brass hand pump would be laborious, and also, I would have to find a way of fitting a tube to the thread at its base. In any of these scenarios, I would of course store the coolant in a suitable container, and dispose of it properly. Thanks for suggestions!
  2. have an Isuzu Marine IM4LB33 engine with a Newage PRM 120D2 gearbox. The gear only engages at about 800rpm and then with a distinct clunk. Any idea why and who can rectify it?
  3. Hi all, I'm new here so if this is in the wrong place I apologise. The engine over heat switch on my narrowboat Isuzu engine has failed. Online I have only been able to find a replacement from China with weeks of delay and a £40+ price tag. Does anyone know where I could get a genuine, or non genuine, replacement here in the UK? I 'believe' the part number is 8971256011, it operates at 105 c. Many thanks if anyone can help.
  4. My Isuzu 42 will need a service soon (250 hrs) so oil and fuel filters are required. Apparently they are the same for the 25, 35 and 55 hp models, so does anyone with one of these engines know a good a source? OEM parts are expensive so I'm hoping there are decent alternatives available. I have done a search without much success (the posts I have found are confusing for a mere numpty), and I don't want to end up with parts that either won't fit or are sub-standard. The OEM part references are 894456-7412 (oil filter) and 897172-5491 (fuel filter). The air filter is 100066-4LS although I don't need one for this service. Any websites or suppliers in the East Midlands (Ashby or Tamworth area) would be appreciated.
  5. Hello!, I've been helping my friend install a new alternator onto his Isuzu engine. We are totally stumped on how to get this thing wired in. It is installed on the engine and the belt has been tensioned, however when we start the engine and rev it a bit the voltage on the batteries do not increase. I'm clueless about alternators and my friend has tried wiring it up as follows: + bolt terminal ----> +ve terminal on first leisure battery W bolt terminal ----> -ve terminal on first leisure battery AUX ----> he found a wire coming from the engine with a female spade connector which appears to connect to this, he tried with it connected and without it connected This is surely looking very newbie to you guys right now, but we are out of ideas and would really really appreciate any help or advice as he has had no power since he bought the boat. Cheers in advance for any and all help!
  6. Hello Canalworld - I've been a liveaboard boater for the last 5 years and have been reading this forum for about the same amount of time. I've never needed to post before as most of the problems I've come up against have been experienced by someone else and answered already. This time however I'm stumped! I have an Isuzu 55. When we are running the engine the temperature comes up to 81 degrees and will sit there all day long. I've been on the Thames punching against the tide and after about an hour it steadily heats up and if left will trigger the overheat alarm. This is easily rectified by dumping the hot water from the calorifier. The point is I know that my cooling system set up is good enough. This summer we were out cruising and for the first ten days everything was as usual, engine temp constant at 81 deg. Next day the temp was steady at 81 but at some point the temperature quickly crept up to 95 degrees, stayed there for about a minute and then dropped back down to about 75 degrees before returning to 81 degrees. I thought nothing of it but the same happened the following day. I tried running the engine without the filler cap and this stopped the problem from occurring, however it also stopped the operating temperature being reached. THis is now a recurring problem but is now getting more and more extreme. The temperature often shoots up 110 degrees and then drops back down to 60 degrees. The way this happens looks to me like a blockage that clears, or a coolant pump getting stuck. If I run the engine at idle it doesnt overheat, it will sit at 81 degrees as if there is no issue, it could be that the calorifier is operating as a good enough heat sink to deal with idle. I have never run it for long enough to heat the calorifier up. I thought this might be a sticky thermostat so I changed it - the stat was gunked up but putting the new one in didnt solve the problem. I thought it might be the coolant pipes, so I have changed these, although not the pipes to/from the skin tank - which I guess might be my next thing to do. I think I probably need to check my coolant pump as well but from what I have read this is not something I want to attempt without ruling out everything else first. Is this the right approach? Anyone seen similar behaviour? Any pointers would be greatfully recieved. Jared
  7. Hi Any recommendations on service parts for the Cananline engines? I have a 52 I should service soon. Looking for oil and air filters, mostly. The "original" Canaline parts are a bit expensive and I've seen a few on ebay but not sure... Any tried and tested sellers/links? Thanks
  8. Hey guys, I'm stuck! I have a Liverpool Boat from 2005 with an Isuzu Marine 35. I am so confused, I've been looking for the agglomerator for months, every now and again I go and take another look. It doesn't seem to be on the primary or secondary fuel filter and I can't see a tap or bolt that would be for this either. The filters are solid, no catch on the bottom. Could someone possibly tell me what I am missing. I'm not great with engines and I'm scared to mess this up. Cheers, Jamie
  9. Hi Having successfully carried out my own engine service on my Isuzu 42, I was pondering changing the coolant but was unsure how to go about this. It has a skin tank and the hoses are much lower than the engine. I've had the boat for nearly four years and it is eight years old. Does it need changing? I've tested the coolant and it's good down to -17. I've also got an Alde 3010 gas CH system, this is also good down to -25 degrees C. I imagine there must be drain plugs somewhere . I'm also no sure what coolant to use, the current colour is pink. Steve
