  1. My heating system is a Webasto Thermo Top C, it runs x2 radiators and x1 towel rack (rad)... System uses a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze & water to run through the rads. The system is connected also to a colirifier to heat water... Currently my webasto was reconditioned as the inner burner was clogged with burnt fuel. Im guessing when the boat was taken from the water it drew dirty fuel from the bottom of the tank. Webasto has been reinstalled by myself in the engine bay, all pipe work is 22mm with 15mm T offs to rads so within recommended frame work. Webasto turns over using when using control unit an fires up, inline fuel pump seems to work... Could feel coolant/water circulation through pipe work to unit. Webasto goes through start up process makes all usual noises but eventually sounds strange. Slight smoke from unit near exhaust and unit gets hot as hell. I dont trust leaving it on in this state. Even bled rads and air seems to be released. Right now i am confused with the whole set up and dont undertand why it is not working. I thought could be electrical related issue but usually a webasto would not even fire up if it doesn't receive its 12v's so again this is why I'm stumped... Any ideas or know anyone good with these systems? Getting to winter soon and would be nice to have the rads working
  2. Hi I've got a boat that was fitted out just over a year ago. I've got a calorifier with a 3 bar PRV but no non-return value or expansion tank. This is fed by a 30psi pump with an accumulator in line shortly after it. Everything has been working fine until now. We've just started noticing occasional vibrations when heating water in our calorifier. The whole immersion tank vibrates and triggers the PRV every 30ish minutes or when the pump runs (refilling the accumulator). I've got a non-return valve and expansion tank on order (Having read up on best practice) but I'm assuming that this wont fix the problem as it was working fine before. Any suggestions on next course of action? Thanks Andy
  3. Hello all, I recently reinstalled my calorifier and plumbing during a major refit. There are only 4 outlets on the calorifier an inlet and outlet for engine coolant and and inlet and outlet for water. Before disconnecting anything I was very careful to note whiche pipes went where and noted 'cold in' and 'hot out' on the corresponding in/outlets. (there is additionally an outlet that has always been a bleed valve that was never touched) Its all connected up fine and is pretty much the same set up as before just with new piping. But I've noticed a few things that are different. The first thing I have noticed is the water pump runs for longer than before and takes longer to come on than before, this I assume means the accumulator is doing a better job for some reason? but this is trivial compared to the other thing... The cold taps are hot...and so are the hot taps. why might this be happening now when it wasn't before? I have the same fittings (bleed valves, stop cocks etc) as before in the same configuration. I assume that for some reason both taps are drawing water from the calorifier, or worse ALL the water in the boat is somehow being heated possibly including my water tank (not a great idea) An easy fix would presumably be to install a one way valve (if these exist in push fit form) in the cold feed just before the calorifier. But I would rather understand why this is happening... Any suggestions are much appreciated.
  4. Good evening everybody. This is my first post here after joining so forgive me if my questions are a bit basic (or thick). I am serious about moving on to the water to live. It is something I have been wanting to do for a long time as bricks and mortar are not really for me. However I am a complete novice when it comes to the world of canal boats. I have been on them and even stayed on one before but I have never been involved in owning one or knowing anyone who has. And so before I buy a boat which I have seen I have a few basic questions relating to making a leisure boat suitable for living aboard, and please forgive me if these questions have been answered a thousand times before. And so in no particular order, if anyone could help me with these questions to start: Survey: Not knowing much about boats I assume it would be sensible of me to have the boat surveyed first, can anybody give me a rough idea of costs involved? (I was chatting to another boat owner when I went to view it and he had worked on the boat and said it was in really good order mechanically, had low hours on the engine, had recently been blacked, and had a long safety certificate etc... Plus he said it was the same owners for 14 years and they looked after it really well and this is reflected by the overall decent condition the boat was in when i viewed it) Electrics: The boat currently has a 12V system running the lights and a 12V fridge. As I have a small number of appliances which would require traditional mains sockets what would be the most cost effective solution to providing power for these? Batteries: The boat has been up for sale for quite a long time (over 9 months i think) and the owner only comes out every now and again to turn over the engine and occasionally take her out. Is there a simple way to check the state of the batteries or would I need to rely on a full survey? Hot Water: The hot water is currently supplied by this method: 'engine cooling water circuit is fitted to a vertical calorifier' - As i understand it I would need to run the engine every day for a couple of hours or so to provide hot water. What is the best/most cost effective alternative to this system so that I could have hot water without running the engine? Heating: The boat currently has a solid fuel stove which is connected to two radiators for heating. Is this the most effective way of heating the boat or are there better alternatives? These are the most basic questions I have at the moment and I would really appreciate any advice you all can give (after browsing the forum for a while I know that have more money is probably the most valuable advice). Finally, my plan is to be as independent as possible which means not using a residential mooring and so having limited access to on-shore power so any advice on starting up, converting a leisure boat to a live aboard or any other general advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all your help Dave
  5. Let me tell you the problem I had with the hot water on my narrowboat. Undoubtedly, many people know the answer, but maybe newbies, like me, will have difficulties. Despite my research on the forum, I have not found. Perhaps because I have trouble reading English when words are too technical. And my owner's manual, yet documented, do not talk about this problem. Besides, I've realized that I do not have the user manual for my immersion heater (built by Thermtec Ldt). Therefore: After several weeks of sailing, we went back to our usual mooring place. A few days after our return, we had no hot water. We never had this problem before. The hot water is produced by the engine or by an "immersion heater". Upon arrival, as soon as we plugged into the electrical network, I turn on the immersion heater with a hidden switch under the rear stairs. But this time, although the switch was turned on, the water is not heated. After several days of research, I removed the wood panels to access the calorifier. On top of the calorifier, there is the head of the immersion heater. It is protected by a white plastic cover. Once the cover removed, I found two small blocks: one (n°2 on picture) adjusts the temperature of the hot water. The other(n°1 on picture) has a small button "reset". I pressed this button, there was a small "click" and a few minutes later, we had hot water again Well, if it can help someone ...
  6. Hello there, Sorry for starting a probably well thrashed-out and potentially very stupid post, but after reading this forum and googling in general for an embarrassingly long time without gaining an understanding of what will do the trick, I'm still scratching my head. I'm doing up a 45footer and I'm after a system that will provide hot water for bath/shower, taps, a couple of little radiators for chilly mornings. I've got a little multifuel stove for heating on really cold days, and I have a morco d61 which I haven't fitted yet because I've realised I won't be able to run any radiators off it (useless, I know). I'm hoping to get a combi boiler of some sort, but the only ones mentioned on here are Alde, which appear to be in the over-a-grand cost region, which is a bit of an issue....but could be managed with a bit of saving. Would any other kind of combi boiler do, would I need anything else with it, or would a tank > pump > boiler > taps/radiators setup be functional? I've read some of the really useful guides on boat heating and water systems and I'm really impressed, I know a lot more than I did but I'm still wondering if there's a reason why you can't just buy an lpg boiler like this: http://www.mrcentralheating.co.uk/Heatline-CaprizPlus-24KW-Combi-Boiler-and-Fernox-Installers-Pack?gclid=Cj0KEQjw6pGfBRD09M-TmYTBzqIBEiQAcRzH5xtPIk5-EU3__2QYKdILCB5vKBf-3YkP9BYH3YKQ08kaApF78P8HAQ& Many thanks for your help all, and sorry again for starting a new topic on this. 7. Hello helpful folks, In preparation for the winter months ahead could someone advise the following? A small 12v pump to push the hot water from the stove along the 3 radiaters attached to the back boiler? It was responsive to a thermal dial that activated the pumo when it reached certain pre set temps. I think the one we had was quite old but is small and cylinderical. Any thoughts anyone on where I could one similar? Thanks
  8. Hi there! I’ve just moved onto a boat with a webasto system (well an MV hydro 5-S) for some reason it cuts out after a minute or 2. The heating system runs through all open radiators and hot water. I leave 1 radiator open and it starts to warm up but the hot water won’t turn on! The pump and battery amps are fine. Does anyone have any advice how to fix it? If not, does anyone know a mechanic or engineer who would be able to come and have a look? I’m currently moored in Harefield. Thank you!
  9. We are fitting out a boat so its bare bones and one thing we have the space for and really feel like we would get plenty of use from is a bath. We have a 1000L watertank. I am just trying to get to grips with what the hot water set ups are in boats. We do have a diesel heater which came with the boat which needs to be set up. I dont fully understand it that would need a calorifier to have the water stored in or can have instant hot water. Main thing im worried about is having to have two large calorofiers to fill the bath. I know also theres LPG boilers you can get. perhaps having the bath hot water run off that would be the best option? What sort of set ups do you bath owners have?
  10. Hi All, We have a Morso Squirrel stove with a back boiler. We are having a few issues getting hot water out of it. Sometimes the stove will have only been on for an hour, and we get hot water, other times it will be on for hours (and hot) but no hot water. We have tried changing the temperature settings for when the pump will kick in, tried high and lower, but can't seem to figure it out. Does anyone know much about them who could advise us? I'm a bit fed up of having cold showers now. We also have a calorifer but even with the engine running this drains too much power. Thanks
  11. Hi, Please can anyone help! We recently purchased a 70ft narrowboat (2007) with a Barrus Shire 45 engine. We have 4 ways in which we should get hot water from the boat which are listed as follows: 1. From the engine when running. 2. Eberspacher diesel system. 3. Log Burner and back boiler. 4. Immersion Heater Problem 1 We are new to boating and have only just bought the boat which was built in 2007. The engine is a Barrus Shire 45 and the coolant system is plumbed to a twin calorifier at the centre of the boat. Circulation is aided by a pump in the engine bay. When the engine is running, the hot water in the calorifier does not get hot. The expansion tank in the engine bay is also staying cool. Problem 2 The Eberspacher and Log burner are linked on one header tank separate to the engine header tank. When the eberspacher is running we get hot radiators ( 4 in total) but no hot water. The header tank is located in a wardrobe at the back of the boat which gets hot but with this system does not boil over. Problem 3 If we light the log burner a pump which is located at the back of the burner starts pumping that is controlled by a heat temp switch I think its called which senses the pipe getting hot and sends a signal for the pump to work and a light illuminates to show this is working. However the header tank which is shared with the eberspacher system does not get hot and pressure builds forcing the liquid out the small outlet pipe of the top of the tank. We get no hot radiators or no hot water. The pump starts to make a loud noise and we have had to put out the fire. We purchased the boat from a Marina who was acting as a brokerage for the vendor. We also paid over £800.00 for a full survey and this was not discovered. The Marina have just charged us £640.00 to relocate the old header tank from its location in the well deck to the wardrobe in the back of the boat as they said it was too low and have also replaced a pressure release valve and refilled with antifreeze and bled the system. This has failed to resolve the problem and the marina are now wanting over £2000 to re-pipe the whole boat! Summary We can only get hot water from the immersion heater. Eberspacher heats radiators but again no hot water - expansion tank gets hot but doesn't overflow Log burner does not heat water or radiators and header tank stays cold and the coolant is forced from top of bottle Engine doe not heat water and header tank bottle stays cold - Marina have replaced a relay on the engine pump but this has failed to resolve the problem Urgent Concern I need to move the boat this weekend to its new mooring (7 hrs cruising) and from the reading I have been doing I am wondering if it is possible that it is one of the engine thermostats that has failed. Ours has 2 thermostats, one at 71 degrees and a second at 88 - IF it is a thermostat and i move the boat - is there a chance that the engine will overheat and seize??? How can i eliminate this being a problem before I move the boat or is it worth replacing them to be sure and safe? Any help greatly appreciated - boat must move on Friday! We have had some helpful suggestions from Tony Brooks with regards to the first part of the email but the urgent concern bit only came to mind last night and made me worry a bit - Thanks in advance Joanne
  12. Hi All! My wife and I have a 63 foot narrowboat. We recently had a Paloma hot water boiler replaced (the old one didn;t work when we bought the boat a few months ago). The Paloma is situated in the galley, around one third of the way along the boat from the bow. The water pump is on the inside of the boat, on the other side of the wall from the cratch. Our bathroom is another third of the way down the boat. When we turn on the hot water tap in the bathroom the Paloma (set on highest temp) ignites (only when water turned on full) and we get hot water - but too hot to shower under. If we turn the cold water on - even just a little - then the Paloma stops burning (presumably because of a lack of water pressure), so then we have cold water. If I turn down any of the settings on the Paloma (down to 'two flames', or down to anything less than '5') then it does not ignite even when hot water tap is turned on full and cold water off. So, we have either hot or cold water, but no happy medium. We are new to narrowboats! Can we turn the water pressure up on the pump? Will this cause leaks if we do? Can we make the Paloma more sensitive to water pressure? Is there anything we can do to solve this?? Any advice would be much appreciated!!! Cheers!!
  13. following on from my "bath" post... I've found room for an additional vertical calorifier which i can site next to the original horizontal one, between them both there will be plenty of HW for my bath. It would be preferable to make use of this hot water all the time and not just for baths, so i want to connect the two. I would also like to add an evacuated tube solar hot water system. the existing calorifier has two coils, one of which is on the webasto, the other on the engine. the new calorifier is also likely to have two coils one of which i could use for the solar hot water. I would like to "mix" the hot water in the two calorifiers so they are both at the same temperature, but I'm at a loss as to the best way to do it. It's probably blindingly obvious, but I would appreciate thoughts on the subject... Bex
  14. Hello, I've been reading the forums for a while now (since we bought our first boat about 18 months ago) but haven't posted before, as I can usually find what I'm looking for from the helpful replies on other topics. But having trawled the internet and speaking to a few people I still haven't got an answer to a couple of my questions. I'm hoping someone here might be able to shed some light. 1. Is the Bosch W11 LPG heater suitable for a narrowboat? We were recommended it, bought one (from a chandlers), and have now been told that it won't pass the BSS and aren't sure why. 2. How much have people been quoted/would quote to set up an LPG system that just powers instant water heater and hob? 3. Can anyone recommend a reliable gas-safe person in/around London who replies to emails/texts/phone calls? We've had a bit of bad luck being recommended people who have never got back in touch. Thanks in advance.
  15. Can anyone help? I have an old Alde comfort gas boiler which heats the water in my calorifier & 4 radiators onboard. I have recently removed 2 of the radiators & capped them off. There don't seem to be any leaks in the system and I have re-filled the header tank with 50/50 anti-freeze/de-ionised water. But when I have switched the boiler back on there is no hot water! I've opened the valves on the radiators to bleed them with the Alde off and on several times and water comes out but it's not heating up!?! I have tried isolating the radiators and firing up the boiler - the water in the header tank gets hot and the pipe leading to the calorifier gets warm but not hot (I've tried leaving it on for several hours but it still doesn't heat the water in the calorifier) What am I missing here?
  16. Hi I've been living aboard for over a year now and each of my 13kg Propane bottles has lasted about 3 months. Pretty good! However, the most recent bottle has only lasted one month - pretty poor! I have a Rinnai instant water heater on board and the only thing I've done differently is to leave the pilot light for this heater on permanently. Prior to this, I would only turn the pilot light on when I had a shower or did some laundry or some washing up. Obviously, having the pilot light on permanently will use more gas up, but I can't believe that it would use 2 month's worth of gas over a period of one month - if you see what I mean! Of course, I could have been given a bottle that was only half full or something but I've been reassured that the stockist simply takes deliveries and has empty bottles collected. It's unlikely I've been deliberately short-changed. So, does anyone have some idea of how much gas having a pilot light on 24/7 might use? Photo of Rinnai with pilot light lit attached! Many thanks
  17. Hi All, Who has this engine and in particular this thermostat setup? My issues was the engine not heating the water, has been fine the last 8 months. Issue cam about when the Bowman end cap on the heat exchanged split, sending coolent everywhere. Replaced and refilled with coolent and bled system and still not hot water. Moved on to checking the thermostat, taking the cover off i was met with a weird hard plastic or possible rubber that has aged in hot water, it came out but very misshaped. Tested thermosat with good old pan of water, opened as it should in hot water. Bought a new one for a perkins 104-19 engine, plus sourced a spring that after researching the engine was listed. On fitting said spring to me it was not strong enough and that the water pressure could just move the whole thermosat in situ...anyway fitted with new thermo, spring etc and still not hot water. Im thinking that perhaps the hard tube is the way to go, buy a piece that attaches to back of plate and outside of thermosat, then drill 3 holes like the old one. I do not know engine temp and gauage broken and dont have testing equipment. I know if i run engine for two hours and take rad cap off the water is luke warm. So i preseum water is just going round the engine and calorifier in one big loop and never getting hot. If i run the Alde boiler the water does heat up so I know the calorifier tnk is OK. Would welcome thoughts and help, many thanks.
