  1. My Hurth split gearbox has a leak on the join at the base. When the box is warm a.t.f. leaks out. I want to avoid removing the box and it has occurred to me to empty he fluid and slightly slack off the side studs allowing the join to open by a very small amount and push a little silicon sealant into the join. Any suggestions as to the pros and cons or possible pitfalls would be very much appreciated or any other thoughts would be gratefully received. thanks for your time.
  2. I need to replace a logo badge (car badge size) and was hoping to use services of 3D Printing service or logo manufacturer. it's only a small piece and needs to be made from some sort of hard plastic. A long shot but hoping a forum member has a contact. I would prefer NW England but not essential. Thanks in advance
  3. Evening folks I have this week fitted a new fuel sender in my diesel tank and when I powered it up it is reading backwards .The tank is empty and it's reading full so I took out sender and moved the float manually to full and it reads empty .it's a simple 2 wire sender and yes the sender is matched to guage 0-190 ohms. Any ideas on correcting this much appreciated .this is the sender
  4. Only been living on the water for 16 years and one of my neighbours has just mentioned he has a low wattage kettle. I've never heard of them. Are they any good? Do they take an age to boil? Etc etc. I've always used a 'normal' one but it is a pain esp in the winter when I have to switch of the electric heaters or washing machine just to boil it as it tends to trip out the electric. Thanks ( trivial question I know but now bored with the Islington boat saga :-) )
  5. Hi, apologies if this is in the wrong section/has been covered before. I took on a boat in December. We have been fine in general for mooring, but due to the recent bank holiday, usual spots where mooring spikes are not needed have been filled and I've been forced to use our antiquated mooring spikes. I wanted to know if anyone could point me in the right direction to purchase some new ones in London. Second hand would be fine but I can't seem to find anyone in London who stocks them. I could really do with picking them up ASAP so if anyone could help I'd be really appreciative. Thanks in advance. Michael.
  6. Hi Guys, I know there are probably a hundred threads covering this topic so I apologise but there is just too much covering other toilets among these. I live on a canal boat along the Regent's Canal and have a cassette toilet. I don't mind the emptying and the smell as I generally only have to do it every two weeks, but what is bugging me is the fact that my chin rests on my knees every time I sit down. I also dislike the fact that it isn't shaped like a normal toilet... but I can't have everything. What I wanted to know from everyone's experience, is if there is indeed a cassette toilet that resembles a pumpout/armitage shanks type, or failing that, what is the best toilet to offer a sitting position similar to that of a normal household. Any feedback appreciated. Thanks, Michael.
  7. Hi, We have a water tank which holds 550 litres. Having had a water gauge that initially did not work properly, we just kept it topped up. Guy came Thursday last week and recalibrated the gauge. It was filled to the brim on Thursday, didn't use any water on Friday or most of Saturday, then used as normal (4 washing machine lots, 5 showers(although we are not standing for ages in shower) and usual tea and cooking usage. the gauge showed empty yesterday and we did not believe it and have called the guy back The tank has just run empty. It may be that we are underestimating just how much water we do use. We have no leaks. Either we are using much more than we thought or the tank is not as big as we have been led to believe. Surely we cant use 550 litres in 3.5 days. any suggestions or advice?
  8. Hi there, I would really appreciate any advice on the cause of my erratic shower drain pump. I do not know what make it is as it's label faces under the bath altough I do know it's a 12v pump (possibly type: F3B-19) and has 15A fuses. It is fine when we're charging from the mains and when we're underway and usually turning the engine on will get it going (but not always). After a full days cruising or battery charging by the 2x100w solar panels it is very temperamental and inconsistent even when inverter displays fully charged or batteries on float. I've tried recording the displayed battery bank voltage when it works and when it doesn't but this has varied from 14.6 - 12.7 in both cases. The batteries seem fairly healthy and retain there charge well but I will replace them if this is a common symptom of failing batteries otherwise perhaps a 240v pump would be more reliable.
  9. My Nespresso machine refuses to work when fed by my non-sinewave inverter or by my generator. Is there a smoothing gadget available that might improve the waveform of my A.C.? I don't want to spend hundreds!
  10. This strange curly 'boathook' head was offered for sale at a recent HNBC auction. What is it? Someone said it might be a railway tool, used possibly for reaching under carriages to retrieve dangling chains without the worker having to risk his neck going under the carriage himself. But can anyone identify it definitively? Where can I buy one?
  11. i am considering an exterior re paint on a 40 ft nb. i have seen a suggestion elsewhere that shipping container paint might be suitable as it is formulated to withstand knocks and the effects of sun and salt water , has anyone any experience with this type of paint.it does appear to be relatively inexpensive
  12. We have bought a boat with a Tricity Bendix 12 volt fridge, model no. RIR 506G - N, but no manual came with it. Does anyone have a manual they could copy? Also, does anyone have any idea what a blinking red light on the front of the fridge above the door is supposed to signify? Thanks Peter
  13. Hi all, I'm just about to purchase two of these solar panels and was wondering whether anyone had any experience with mounting something similar on their roof and was able to recommend where best to get screw-down / secure mounts? I had a search through old posts and, while many discuss various options for securing solar panels or discuss building their own frames, no-one seems to have mentioned actually purchasing frames from a given site and how they found the experience of installing it (unless I missed a post somewhere). Thanks as ever for any thoughts or experience. Ryan
